ComputerVirus

OnceattachedtohostProgram,thevirusesthenlookforotherprogramsto"infect".Inthisway,theviruscanspreadquicklythroughoutaharddiskoranentireorganizationwhenitinfectsaLANoramulti-usersystem.Atsomepoint,determinedbyhowtheviruswasprogrammedthevirusattacks.Thetimingoftheattackcanbelinkedtoanumberofsituations,includingacertaintimeordate,thepresenceofaparticularfile,thesecurityprivilegeleveloftheuser,andthenumberoftimesafileisused.Likewise,themodeofattackvaries.So-called"benign"virusesmightsimplydisplayamessage,liketheonethatinfectedIBM'smaincomputersystemlastChristmaswithaseason'sgreeting.

Malignantvirusesaredesignedtodamagethesystem.Theattackistowipeoutdata,todeletefliesortoformattheharddisk.
