‘Thewinterwindisloudandwiled,Comeclosetome,mydarlingchild;Forsakethybooks,andmatelessplay;And,whilethenightisgatheringgrey,We’lltalkitspensivehoursaway;-‘Ierne,roundourshelteredhallNovember’sgustsunheededcall;NotonefaintbreathcanenterhereEnoughtowavemydaughter’shair,AndIamgladtowatchtheblazeGlancefromhereyes,withmimicrays;Tofeelhercheeksosoftlypressed,Inhappyquietonmybreast.‘But,yeteventhistranquilityBringsbitter,restlessthoughtstome;And,intheredfire’scheerfulglow,
Ithinkofdeepglens,blockedwithsnow;
Idreamofmoor,andmistyhills,
Whereeveningclosesdarkandchill;
For,lone,amongthemountainscold,
LiethosethatUhavelovedofold.
Andmyheartaches,inhopelesspain
Exhaustedwithrepiningvain,

Aswise,tomourntheseedwhichgrew
Unnoticedonitsparenttree,
Becauseitfellinfertileearth,
Andspranguptoagloriousbirth-
Struckdeepitsroot,andliftedhigh
Itsgreenboughs,inthebreezysky.

Blood-red,herose,and,arrow-straight,
Hisfiercebeamsstruckmybrow;
Thesoulofnature,sprang,elate,
Butminesanksadandlow!
Mylidscloseddown,yetthroughtheirveil,
Isawhim,blazing,still,
Andsteepingoldthemistydale,
Andflashuponthehill.
Iturnedmetothepillow,then,
Tocallbacknight,andsee
Yourworldsofsolemnlight,again,
Throbwithmyheart,andme!

Coldintheearth--andthedeepsnowpiledabovethee,
Far,far,removed,coldinthedrearygrave!
HaveIforgot,myonlyLove,tolovethee,
SeveredatlastbyTime'sall-severingwave?
Now,whenalone,domythoughtsnolongerhover
Overthemountains,onthatnorthernshore,
Restingtheirwingswhereheathandfern-leavescover
Thynobleheartforever,evermore?
Coldintheearth--andfifteenwildDecembers,
Fromthosebrownhills,havemeltedintospring:
Faithful,indeed,isthespiritthatremembers
Aftersuchyearsofchangeandsuffering!
SweetLoveofyouth,forgive,ifIforgetthee,
Whiletheworld'stideisbearingmealong;
Otherdesiresandotherhopesbesetme,
Hopeswhichobscure,butcannotdotheewrong!
Nolaterlighthaslightenedupmyheaven,
Nosecondmornhasevershoneforme;
Allmylife'sblissfromthydearlifewasgiven,
Allmylife'sblissisinthegravewiththee.
But,whenthedaysofgoldendreamshadperished,
AndevenDespairwaspowerlesstodestroy;
ThendidIlearnhowexistencecouldbecherished,
