Butthetruthisthatthesedatesaren’trelatedtotheriskoffoodpoisoningorfood-bornillness,accordingtoTimeNews.However,mostcustomersmisinterpreteduse-bydatesandrelatedthemtothesafetyofthefood,andtheystilllargelydonow.
Eggs,forexample,canstillbeeatenthreetofiveweeksafterpurchaseeventhoughtheuse-bydateismuchearlier.Whentheiruse-bydatespass,strawberryjuicemayloseitsredcolorandbiscuitsmaylosetheircrunch(松脆的口感),buttheyarenotharmful.
“It’saconfusingsubject,thedifferencebetweenfoodqualityandfoodsafety,”saidJenaRoberts,vicepresidentofNationalFoodLab,aUSfoodtestingcompany.“EveninthefoodindustryIhavecolleagueswhogetconfused.”
