In1950,GwendolynBrooksbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantowinthePulitzerPrizeforPoetry.ShewontheprizeforhersecondbookofpoemscalledAnnieAllen.AnnieAllenisacollectionofpoetryaboutthelifeofaBronzevillegirlasadaughter,awifeandmother.Sheexperiencesloneliness,loss,deathandbeingpoor.MsBrookssaidthatwinningtheprizechangedherlife.
Hernextworkwasanovelwrittenin1953calledMaudMartha.MaudMarthareceivedlittlenoticewhenitwasfirstpublished.Butnowitisconsideredanimportantworkbysomecritics.Itsmainideasaboutthedifficultlifeofmanywomenarepopularamongfemalewriterstoday.
