Popularfilmsandbooksarefullofsupposedlyinspirationalstatementsabouthowallyouneedtodoisbelieveinyourselfandthenyou’llbeabletoachieveanythinginlife.Thisissimply,andobviously,nottrue.Idon’tthinkthereisaneedtoexplainthatmanyobstaclesandmisfortunesinlifeareunavoidable,orcannotbeovercome.Ourancestorsknewthis,andmanyphilosophicalandreligioustraditionsarebasedontheacceptancethatbeingaliveisaverychallengingtask,whichcomeswithsignificantamountsofsuffering.Itgoeswithoutsayingthatweshoulddoallwecantomaximizeoursenseofwellbeingandminimizeoursuffering,buttheendresultcannotbesastateofsustainedhappiness.Wearenotdesignedthatway.

Itcouldbearguedthatpositivepsychologyblamesthosewhoaresufferingfortheirsuffering,asitisbasedontheideathatunhappinessisentirelyavoidable.Itfollowsthereforethatanunhappypersonmusbeinadequateandincompetent.Positivepsychologyencouragespeoplewhoarestrugglingwithaparticulargoaltopersevereinthefaceofunfavorablepossibilities,whichismuchmorepunishingpsychologicallyinthelongrunthanacceptingdefeat.
