Asurprisingamount
ofone'stimeas
astudentand
professional
is
spent
reporting
the
results
of
one's
researchprojectsforpresentationtoteachers,managers,
andclients.Indeed,withoutbasicresearchskillsandthe
abilitytopresentresearchresultsclearlyandcompletely,
anindividualwillencountermanyobstaclesinschooland
onthejob.Theneedforsomeresearch-writingabilityis
felt
nearly
equally
by
college
students
in
all
fields,
engineering
and
science
aswell
as
business
andthe
humanities.Graduatestudyoftenmakesgreatdemands
on
thestudent's
research-writing
skills,
and
most
professionscontinuethedemand;education,advertising
and
marketing,
economics
andaccounting,
science
and
engineering,
psychology,
anthropology,
the
arts,
and
agriculturemayallrequireregularreportingofresearch
data.
ELEMENTSOFTHERESEARCHPAPER
Thestandardresearchreport,regardlessofthefieldorthe
intended
reader
contains
four
major
sections.
These
sections
may
be
broken
down
into
a
variety
of
subsections,
and
they
may
be
arranged
in
avariety
of
ways,buttheyregularlymakeupthecoreofthereport.
ProblemSection.Thefirstrequiredsectionofaresearch
report
is
the
statement
of
the
problem
with
which
the
research
project
is
concerned.
This
section
requires
a
precise
statement
of
the
underlying
question
which
the
researcher
has
set
out
to
answer.
Inthissame
section
thereshouldbeanexplanationofthesignificance--social,
economic,medical,psychological,educational,etc.
--of
thequestion;inotherwords,whytheinvestigationwas
worthconducting.
Thus,
ifwe
set
out,
for
example,
to
answer
the
question
"What
isthe
effect
of
regular
consumptionoffastfoodsonthehealthoftheAmerican
teenager?
"wemustexplainthatthequestionisthoughtto
havesignificantrelevancetothehealthofthissegmentof
thepopulationandmightleadtosomesortofregulations
onsuchfoods.
Afrequentsubsectionofthisproblemsectionisareviewof
pastresearchonthetopicbeinginvestigated.Thiswould
consist
of
summaries
of
the
contributions
of
previous
researchertothequestionunderconsiderationwithsome

that

thecredibilityoftheresearcherbyindicatingthatthedata

investigativetradition.
Procedures
Section.
The
second
major
section
of
the
research
report
details,
with
as
much
data
as
possible,
exactly
how
the
study
was
carried
out.
This
section
includesdescriptionofanynecessaryequipment,howthe
subjects
were
selected
ifsubjects
were
used,
what
statisticaltechniquewasusedtoevaluatethesignificance
ofthefindings,howmanyobservationsweremadeand
when,etc.Aninvestigationoftherelativeeffectivenessof
variousswim-strokeswouldhavetodetailthenumberof
swimmerstested,thenatureofthetestsconducted,the
experienceoftheswimmers,theweatherconditionsatthe
timeofthetest,andanyotherfactorsthatcontributedto
theoverallexperiment.Thegoaloftheproceduressection
istoallowthereadertoduplicatetheexperimentifsuch
weredesiredtoconfirm,orrefute,yourfindings.
ResultsSection.Thethird,andperhapsmostimportant,
sectionoftheresearchreportisthepresentationofthe
resultsobtainedfromtheinvestigation.Thebasicrulein
this
section
is
to
give
all
data
relevant
to
the
research
questioninitiallyasked.Although,ofcourse,one'snatural
tendencymightbetosuppressanyfindingswhichdonot
insomewaysupportone'shypothesis,suchdishonestyis
antitheticaltogoodresearchreportinginanyfield.Ifthe
experimentsundertakenfailtoproveanything,ifthedata
was
inadequate
or
contrary
to
expectations,
the
report
shouldbehonestlywrittenandascompleteaspossible,
justasitwouldbeifthehypothesisweretotallyprovenby
theresearch.
Discussion
Section.
The
final
required
section
of
a
researchreportisadiscussionoftheresultsobtainedand
astatementofanyconclusionswhichmaybedrawnfrom
thoseresults.Ofprimaryinterestinbusinessandtechnical
researchreportsisthevalidityoftheresultsasthebases
for
company
decisions:
Will
our
planned
construction
project
meet
federal
environmental
guidelines
and
be
approved
for
building?
Will
this
new
program
attract
skilled
personnel
to
our
company?
Will
this
new
oil
recovery
technique
be
financially
feasible?
Thus,
the
discussion
section
ofthe
research
report
must
evaluate
theresearchresultsfully:
weretheyvalidlyobtained,are
theycompleteorlimited,aretheyapplicableoverawide
range
of
circumstances?
The
discussion
section
should

Research
reports
are
considered
formal
professional
communication.
As
such,
there
is
little
emphasis
ona
livelystyle,although,ofcourse,thereisnoobjectionto
writingthatispleasingandinteresting.Theprimarygoals
ofprofessionalcommunicationareaccuracy,clarity,and
completeness.
The
rough
draft
of
any
research
report
should
beedited
to
ensure
that
all
data
is
correctly
presented,thatallequipmentislisted,thatallresultsare
properly
detailed.
Asanaidtothe
reader,
headings
indicatingatleastthemajorsectionofthereportshould
be
used,
and
alldata
should
be
presented
under
the
proper
headings.
In
addition
totheir
function
of
suggesting
to
the
reader
the
contents
of
each
section,
headingsenhancetheformalappearanceandprofessional
qualityofthereport,increasetosomedegreethewriter's
credibilitybyreflectingalogicalandmethodicalapproach
tothereportingprocess,andeliminatetheneedforwordy
transitionaldevicesbetweensections.
Researchdatashouldbepresentedinawaythatplaces
proper
emphasis
on
major
aspect
of
the
project.
For
different
readers
different
aspects
will
take
on
different
degreesofimportance,andsomeconsiderationshouldbe
given
to
structuring
research
reports
differently
for
different
audiences.
Management,
for
example,
will
be
mostconcernedwiththeresultsofaresearchproject,and
thustheresultssectionshouldbeemphasized,probably
bypresentingitimmediatelyaftertheproblemsectionand
beforetheproceduressection.Otherresearcherswouldbe
mostinterestedintheproceduressection,andthisshould
be
highlighted
in
writing
upresearch
projects
for
publicationinprofessionaljournalsorforpresentationat
professional
conferences.
For
non-technical
readers
and
federalagencies,theimplicationsoftheresultsmightbe
the
most
important
consideration,
and
emphasis
should
be
placed
on
the
discussion
of
the
report
for
this
readership.
