Abstract
Usingthewell-knownbandwidthformulaandthehalfpowerbandwidthformula[R.E.D.Bishop,G.M.L.Gladwell,Aninvestigationintothetheoryofresonancetesting,PhilosophicalTransactionsoftheRoyalSocietyofLondonA255(1963)241–280],inparticular,isthesimplestwaytoestimatemodaldampingforengineers.Byusingthehalfpowerbandwidthformula,thedampingfactorisestimatedtobeapproximatelythehalfbandwidthatthehalfpowerpoints.Oneofthemajorlimitationsthatrestricttheuseofthismethodisthecouplingeffectbetweencloselyspacedmodes.Inthispaper,thedependenceofthedampingestimationaccuracyontheselectedpowerratiosisstudiedwithbothanalyticalandexperimentaldataoffrequencyresponsefunctions.Theresultsshowthatbyselectingadequatepowerratiovalues,thecouplingeffectcanbeminimizedandtheestimationaccuracycanbesignificantlyimprovedforcloselyspacedmodes.Afurtherimprovementofaccuracycanbeobtainedbyapplyingthealgorithmofmodeisolation[H.P.Yin,D.Duhamel,Substractiontechniqueandfinitedifferenceformulasformodalparameterestimation,MechanicalSystemsandSignalProcessing18(2004)1497–1503;

Machine-learningresearchistostudyandapplythecomputermodelingoflearningprocessesintheirmultiplemanifestations,whichfacilitatethedevelopmentofintelligentsystem.Inthispaper,wehaveintroducedaclusteringbasedmachine-learningalgorithmcalledclusteringalgorithmsystem(CAS).TheCASalgorithmistestedtoevaluateitsperformanceandfindfruitfulresults.Wehavebeenpresentedsomeheuristicstofacilitatemachine-learningauthorstoboostuptheirresearchworks.TheInfoBaseoftheMinistryofCivilServicesisusedtoanalyzetheCASalgorithm.TheCASalgorithmiscomparedwithothermachine-learningalgorithmslikeUNIMEM,COBWEB,andCLASSIT,andwasfoundtohavesomestrongpointsoverthem.Theproposedalgorithmcombinedadvantagesoftwodifferentapproachestomachinelearning.ThefirstapproachislearningfromExamples,CASsupportsSingleandMultipleInheritanceandExceptions.CASalsoavoidsprobabilityassumptionswhicharewellunderstoodinconceptformation.ThesecondapproachislearningbyObservation.CASappliesasetofoperatorsthathaveproventobeeffectiveinconceptualclustering.WehaveshownhowCASbuildsandsearchesthroughaclustershierarchytoincorporateorcharacterizeanobject.
