Look,we’vewrittenbeforeaboutHRandtegame-changingrolewebelieveitcanandwouldplayastheengineofanorganization’hiring,appraisal,anddevelopmentprocesses.We’veassertedthattoomanycomaniesrelegateHRtothemundanebusy-workofnewsletters,picnics,andbenefits,andwe’vemadethecasetateveryCEOshouldelevatehisheadofHRtothesamestatureastheCFO.ButiftherewaseveratimetounderscoretheimportanceofHR,ithasarrived.And,sadly,iftherewaseveratimetoseehowfewcompaniesgetHRright,ithasarrived,too,asouracquaintance’sexperienceshows.So,toyourquestion:

First,HRhastomakesurepeopleareletgobytheirmanagers,notstrangers.Beingfiredisdehumanizinginanyevent,buttogetthenewsfroma“hiredgun”onlymakesmattersworseThat’swhyHRmustensurethatmanagersaccpttheirduty,whichistobeinontheoneconversationatworkthatmustbepersonal.Pinkslipsshouldbedeliveredface-to-face,eyeball-to-eyeball.Second,HR’sroleistoserveathecompany’sarbiterofequiy.Nothingraiseshacklesmore
duringalayoffthanthesensethatsomepeople’danamelytheloudmouthsandthelitigious’sgettingbetterdealsthanothers.HRcanmitigatethatdynamicbymakingsureacrossunitsanddivisionsthatseverancearrangements,iftheyexist,areappropriateandevenhanded.Yousimplydon’twantpeopletoleavefeelingasiftheygotyou-know-what.Theyneedtowalkoutsaying:
