Thestoryofthesong“HappyBirthdaytoYou”Beganasasweetone,butlaterbecamebitter.Twosisters,MildredHill,ateacheratakindergarten,andDr.PattyHill,theprincipalofthesameschool,wroteasongtogetherforthechildren,entitled“GoodMorningtoAll”.WhenMildredcombinedhermusicaltalentswithhersister’sknowledgeintheareaofkindergarteneducation,‘GoodMorningtoAll”wassuretobeasuccess.Thesisterpublishedthesonginacollectionentitled“SongStoriesoftheKindergarten”in1893.Thirty-oneyearslater,afterDr.PattyHillbecametheheadoftheDepartmentofKindergartenEducationatColumbiaUniversity’sTeachersCollege,agentlemanbythenameRobertColemanpublishedthesong,withoutthesisters’permission.Headdedasecondpart,whichisthefamiliar“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Mr.Coleman’sadditionofthesecondpartmadethesongpopularand,finally,thesisters”originalfirstpartdisappeared.“HappyBirthdaytoYou”hadaltogetherreplacedthesisters’originalsong“GoodMorningtoAll”.In1916PattytooklegalactionagainstMr.Coleman.Incourt,shesucceededinprovingthatheyweretherealownersofthesong.
