AlbertSzent-GyorgyiwasborninBudapestonSeptember16,1893.In1911heenteredhisuncle’slaboratorywherehestudieduntiltheoutbreakofWorldWarIwhenhewasmobilized.HeservedontheItalianandRussianfronts,andhewasdischarged(准许离开)in1917afterbeingwoundedinaction.HecompletedhisstudiesinBudapestbeforehewenttoHamburgforatwo-yearcourseinphysicalchemistry.In1920hebecameanassistantatauniversityinLeiden,theNetherlandsandfrom1922to1926heworkedwithH.J.HamburgeratthePhysiology(生理学)Institute,Groningen,theNetherlands.

In1926,Szent-Gyorgyiwasreadytoendhisownlifeafteranembarrassingprobleminhiscareer.Thescientist,thirty-two,hadwrittenapaperandhandedittohisbossforapprovaltopublish.Hisbossthrewitinthedustbin.Concludinghislifewasafailure,theyoungresearcherquit.Unabletosupporthiswifeandchild,hesentthemhometoherparents.Hisfinalwishwastoattendonelastscientificmeeting,tobeamongscientists,tohaveonelastgoodtime.Sohewenttothe1926InternationalPhysiologicalSocietyCongressinSweden.
