ReidworksasaconsultingreliabilityengineerintheWashington,DCareaandisalong-timememberoftheWashingtonChapter.Hehassoughtoutandtestedseveralcomputerprogramsthatsupportsimulationandanalysisofthemissionreliabilityandavailabilityofcomplexsystems.Theobjectiveistofurnishusersacentralresourceforidentifyingsomecurrentlyavailablemissionsimulationtools,comparingtheircapabilities,andlocatingtheirvendors.

Thisreportreflectsdevelopmentssincetheprevious(September1999)comparison.Twonewsimulatorshavebeenaddedandthepreviousdescriptionsupdatedwithnewinformation.

Reid’ssubjectisamovingtarget;thereportisbelievedtobecurrentasofJune2000butcomputersoftwareisarapidlyevolvingindustry.Theopinionsexpressedarethoseoftheauthor,whoreservestherighttotellyoutomorrowthatwhathetoldyoutodaywaswrong.Practitionerswhohaveexperienceusingtheprograms,andvendorswhoknowsomethingthatwasmissed,areinvitedtocontacthimatreidwillis@withyourcommentsandcorrections.

ComparisonofReliability-AvailabilitySimulators

Anumberofsoftwaretoolshaverecentlybecomeavailableforusebyreliabilityengineers.Likeanyotherengineeringsupportsoftware,amissionreliabilitysimulatorcanbeexpensiveandwillprobablyrequireasignificantinvestmentinlearninghowtouseitwithconfidence.Theobjectiveofthiscomparisonistogivereliabilityengineersaquickwaytoidentifythosetoolsthatmightmeettheircurrentandfuturerequirements,andfindthevendors.Asseen,somealsoofferusefulfeaturessuchasdatacommonalitywithotherreliabilitysoftware.

.Ninesimulationcomputerprogramswereevaluatedagainstasetofcommonrequirementsformissionsimulationandreliability-availabilityanalysis.Overall,thesimulatorsofferawidevarietyofbasicfunctionsandspecialfeatures.Thesimulatorsandtheirsourcesare:

Thecommercialvendorsorgovernmentsponsorswereconsultedtoresolveanyquestionsandtesttheirdegreeofusersupport.

Criteria

Afterreviewofseveralreliability-availabilityandlogisticsanalysesthathavebeenconductedfortheArmy,Navy,MarinesandCoastGuardinsupportofship,vehicleandaircraftdevelopmentandimprovementprograms,ten(admittedlyarbitrary)simulationcapabilitiesweredefinedthatusersmightneedinmissionsimulationstosupportreliability-maintainabilityanalyses:

Complexmodels:

Representlargesystems,downtotheequipmentitemlevel,includingcomplexdesignredundancies.

Multi-phasemission:

Simulatesystemoperationoveratimelineofchangingsuccessrequirements,equipmentoperatingconditions,andrepairconstraints.

Sparesinventoriesandrestock:

Representsparepartsconsumption,routinelocalsparesstockreplenishment,andurgentordersforsparesnotonhand.

Statisticaloptions:

Asaminimum,offerachoiceofExponentialorWeibulldistributionforequipmentfailureandExponentialorLognormalforrepair.

Datasharing:

Participateinadatainterchangeofsystemconfiguration,equipmentcharacteristics,andpartslistsaccessibletosupportotherreliabilityandmaintainabilitystudies.

Operationalavailability:

Calculatesystemmissionavailabilityunderlogisticconstraints.

Reliability:

Calculatesystemreliabilityatendofmission.

Criticalequipment:

Rankequipmentorotherelementalcomponentsbyresponsibilityforsystemdowntime(unavailability)andmissionfailures(unreliability).
