Amethodandapparatusformeltingarawmaterialsuchasglass.Themethodcomprisesacreatingaflowofrawmaterialinterruptedbyaheatedphaseseparationbarrier(3,31,32),whereinmeltingisachievedbytransferofheatfromthephaseseparationbarriertotherawmaterial.Theprocesscomprises:

providingsolidrawmaterialtothephaseseparationbarrier,whereinthephaseseparationbarriersupportsthesolidrawmaterial;

heatingthephaseseparationbarriertoatemperaturewhichis(a)atleast700°

C.and(b)sufficienttocausemeltingofthesolidrawmaterialwhichcontactsthebarrier,whereinanymeltedrawmaterialformedoncontactwiththephaseseparationbarrierflowsofforthroughthephaseseparationbarrier;

andcollectingthemeltedrawmaterial;

whereinthephaseseparationbarriercausesseparationofthesolidandmeltedphaseswithintheflowoftherawmaterial.Twoormoremeltersmaybeusedinparallelandtheresultantmeltedrawmaterialsmixedtogetherinthemeltedstate.Inaddition,thereisprovidedamethodandapparatusforproducingameltcomprisingamixtureofmeltedrawmaterials.Theapparatuscomprisestwomeltingchambersconnectedviaoutletstoahomogeniser.
