Objectives:

1.Thepurposeofthecourseistohelpstudents’toimprovetheirintegratedskillsonlearningEnglish.Thiscourseistogivefreshmanathoroughunderstandingoftheimportanceandwaysofmasteringthe5EnglishSkills.

Studentswillbeexpectedtokeepavocabularylog.TheywillalsobeexpectedtomakefulluseofEnglish-Englishdictionariesorbilingualdictionaries.

2.Goal

a)General

TobegintounderstandandusecorrectlythebasicelementsofreadinginEnglishincluding:

-WorktowardsfluencyinlearningEnglishbyenhancingskills,orlinguisticprocessingabilitiese.g.wordrecognition,syntacticprocessing

-Studentstomovefrombottom-upprocessofreadingtoanincorporationofbothbottom-upandto-downprocessing.Interactivemodelswillalsobeusedforwordrecognition.

-Studentstolearnvocabularyandgrammarrelatedtothetexts

-Studentstoreadactively

-Studentstoparticipateinpre-readingandpost-readingactivities

-Reviewofvariousgrammaticalforms,includingnouns–countableandnoncountable,tensesandothersasneeded

Otherphotocopiesofappropriatematerialfromavarietyofsourceswillbegivenoutasandwhenneeded.

Requirements:

IndividualWorkforthesemester:

-Bookreport.Studentsarerequiredtoreadabooktheyareinterestedin,andfindaviewtheywouldliketotalkabout.Thenwriteabookreport.Theywillhandinbeforethesemester.

-Studentsareprovidedfouressays.Listentothemfirst,andthenreadaloud,finallylearnbyheart.Thefouressaysare:

Youth;Lifeisachessboard;TheDoerofdeedandThreepassions(WhatIlivedfor)

GroupWork:

PresentationorRolePlay.StudentsaredividedintoseveralgroupstofinishtheRolePlay(forexample,Unit3)anddothePPTpresentation(forexample,Unit2)

AttendanceandParticipation:

Policies

Attendance:

MissedclassesmustbemadeupandthereasonreportedtogetherwithasicknotewithChinesenameinbothcharactersandpinyintogetherwithstudentnumberanddate.Amissedclasswilllosescorestowardsthe‘ClassScore’.Moreover,ifthestudenthas4timesofabsent,thefinalscoreisF.

Homework:

mustbedeliveredontime.

EnglishOnly:

NoChineseisallowedinEnglishClass.

DictionaryandElectronics:

English-Englishdictionariesarepreferred.

Requirementsforthestudents:

CellPhones,MP3’s(etc)shouldbeturnedoffduringclass.
