DeloitteCEOBarrySalzbergadmitshe’sstillstrugglingtoconvert“nonbelievers,”butsaystheyaretheexceptions.Therecessionprovidesanincentiveforcompaniestodesignmorelattice-orientedcareers.Studiesshowtelecommuting,forinstance,canhelpbusinessescutrealestatecosts20%andpayroll10%.What’smore,creatingaflexibleworkforcetomeetstaffingneedsinachangingeconomyensuresthatacompanywillstillhavelegswhenthemarketrecovers.Redeployingsomeworkersfromonedivisiontoanother—orreducingtheirsalaries—isawholelotlessexpensivethanlayingeveryoneoffandstartingfromscratch.
