  Duringusingpronoun“it”,“he”,“this”,“that”etc.,explicitantecedentsshouldturnup.However,manystudentspossiblyveryclearwhatthepronounsrefertowhentheyusethesepronouns.Butinpassagethereislackofantecedentsorexpressingunclear.Thiscausesmeaningvaguely.Forexample:

Shetoldmysisterthatshewaswrong.Here,thefaultysentenceisapronounwithambiguousreference.Thesecondsheinthesentencemayrefertothesubject“mysister”.Therevisedsentenceis:

“I’mwrong,”shesaidtomysister.Thiskindoferrorsiscommonlyseeninwriting.

  Useaperiod“fullstop”attheendofacompletesentence,howevershortitis.

  Donotuseacommatojointwocoordinateclauses;

useacommaandaconjunction,orasemicolon.

  Makeyourcommasdifferentfromyourperiod.Acommahasalittletail“,”;

aperiodisadot“.”,notatinycircle“。

  Useaquestionmarkattheendofadirectquestion;

donotuseoneattheendofanindirectquestion.

  Usetheexclamationmarkonlyafteranemphaticinterjectionorwordsthatexpressverystrongmotion.Donotoveruseit.

  Putdirectspeechbetweenquotationmarks.Thesubjectandverbthatintroduceaquotationmaybeputbefore,after,orinthemiddleofthequotation.

  betweenparts.Asentenceiscoherentwhenitswordsorpartsareproperlyconnectedandtheirrelationshipsunmistakableclear.Itisnotcoherentifithasfaultyparallelconstructions,pronounswithambiguousreference,danglingormisplacedmodifiers,confusingshiftsinpersonandnumber,orinvoice,tense,andmood.Whenwriting,studentsmustpayattentiontotheunitywhichisthequalityofaneffectivesentence.Andmakesuretheunifiedsentenceexpressasinglecompletethought.Youcanreadthemasterpiecesoffamouswritersasmanyasyoucan.Beforehandinginyourwriting,youshouldproofreaditonceortwice.

  Prographunityisusuallyachievedthroughthe

  “leadership”oftheparagraph---thetopicsentence.Thetopicsentenceisthecentraltheme,summarizingthemainideatobeexpressedintheparagraph.Althougumostparagraphswouldhavethetopicsentenceatthebeginning,therearecasesinwhichthetopicsentenceisplacedinthemiddleoftheparagraphorattheendofit.Butnomatterwherethetopicsentenceappears,therestsentencesmustallbehangingcloselyaroundthatcentralideaorthemerepresentedbythetopicsentence.Whileunityismainlyconcernedwiththecoordinationofthesubordinatingsentenceswiththetopicsentence,coherencislarglyconcernedwiththenaturalandlogicalmovementsflowofsentencesinparagraph.Toachievecoherence,eachsentenceinparagraphshouldbesoarrangedthatitfollowsnaturallyfromtheprevioussentenceandideassmoothlytothenext.Sentencesthatexpressrelativelyunimportantideasshouldbealwayssubordinatedtothosethatcontainthemoreimportantones;

inparticular,themainideaoftheparagraphshouldbeadequatelyandforcefullyexpressed.

  3.4UseRightConjunction

  Conjunctionsplaysuchanimportantrolethatwithout

  them,theEnglishlanguagewouldnotbecomplete.Infact,itisthoseconjunctionswhichbridgetherelationbetweentwonounsandbetweensomeverbsandsomenouns,withoutwhichthereisno“communication”betweencertaingroupsofwords.Indeed,nolanguagecanbeawell-knittedandcompletelanguagewithoutconjunction!

Conjunctionsareneverusedalone:

theyalwaysgotogetherwithotherwords.Therefore,thefunctionsofconjunctionsdependonthecompanyofotherwords.Thepartsthatconjunctionslinktomustbelogicalandacceptable.Inotherwords,theconjunctionisneededhere.Withoutitthesentencewillbedullorbecomeswrong.Usingconjunctiosproperlycanshowyourlinguisticcompetenceofwriter.Andthiscan“weight”yourwriting.

  Conjunctiveadverbslikehowever,therefore,hence,nevertheless,moreover,thus,otherwise,besides,etc.,shouldnotbeusedasconjunctionstolinktwocoordinateclauses.Becauseofnouseornotgoodatusingconjunctionsortransitionaladverbtoexpressallkindoflogicalrelations,thesentencewillbenotcorrect.AsbeforesaidtheEnglishisalanguagewhichweshouldpayattentiontothehypotasis.WhenlearningwritingofEnglish,oneshouldtakenoteofthislanguagephenomenon.OnlyinthiswaycanwereducetheinfluencetoEnglishcausedbythecharacterofChinesesyntax.

  3.5OvercomeChineseEnglish

  3.5.1Collectmorelanguagepointsandcontrastthe

  harmonyanddifferenceoftwolanguagesandlearnthinkinginEnglish

  Thatistosaylearnershouldoftencontrastthe
