In1971Morrisonresumedherteachingcareer,teachingEnglishatUniversityofNewYork,servingasavisitingprofessoratYalefrom1976to1978,attheStateUniversityofYewYorkatAlbanyfrom1984to1989.Since1989shehasbeenteachingatPrincetonUniversityasamemberoftheprograminAfrican-Americanstudiesandofthecreativewritingdepartment.Meanwhileshecontinuedherwriting.Hernextnovel,Saul(1974)examinesthefriendshipbetweentwoblackwomenSulfaandNell,anddepictshowtheyhavegrownuptogetherbuttakendifferentroadsoflifeintheirmaturity.ThenovelwontheNationalBookCriticAward.TheSongofSolomon,publishedin1977,wasagreatersuccessthanherpreviousnovels.SetinMichiganintheearly1930s,thenovelisnarratedfromamalepointofview.Inhiseffortstorecoverhisancestor’sproperties,asackofgold,MilkmanDeadrediscovershisracialrootsandculturalidentity.ThenovelwasaBook-of-the-MonthClubselection,anditplacedToniMorrisoninthefirstrankofAmericannovelists.TarBabycameoutin1981.Unlikeherpreciousnovels,thisbookhascharactersbothblackandwhite.Byjuxtaposingtheminthecentralconflictoftheplot,theauthordramatizestheracialcomplexitiesthatcharacterizetheAmericanculturallandscape.Publishedin1987,Morrison’snextworkBeloveddealswithslaveryandinfanticide.ItwasanothertriumphandthewinnerofthePulitzerPrizeforFiction.TheprotagonistSeethehasrunawayfromslaveryandisseekingrefugeinOhio.Whentheslavemasterssearchforher,shekillsherbabygirlinordertosaveherfromslaveryshehasjustescaped.However,theghostofthebaby“Beloved”,anamewrittenonhertombstone,comesbacktohunther.InJazz(1992),Joe,theunfaithfulhusbandofViolet,killsagirlhelovessomuchinafitofpassion.Thefragmentednarrativegraduallyunfolds,showinghowandwhythistragedyhappensinHarlem,NewYork.Paradise(1998)isthemostrecentworkbyRuby,atinyall-blackfarmingcommunityinOklahoma,

Morrison’snovelsaremostlysetinblackcommunityinthethirtiesorforties,buttheydonotmerelytellstories.Whentalkingaboutthenovel,shesays,“itshouldbebeautiful,andpowerful,butitshouldalsowork.Itshouldhavesomethinginitthatsuggestswhattheconflictsare,whattheproblemsare.Butitneednotsolvethoseproblemsbecauseitisnotacasestudy,itisnotarecipe.…IfanythingIdo,inthewayofwritingnovels(orwhateverIwrite),isn’taboutthevillageorthecommunityoraboutyou,thenitisnotaboutanything.Iamnotinterestedinindulgingmyselfinsomeprivate,closedexerciseofmyimaginationthatfulfillsonlytheobligationofmypersonaldreams-whichistosayyes,theworkmustbepolitical.…Itseemstomethatthebestartispoliticalandyououghttobeabletomakeitunquestionablypoliticalandirrevocablybeautifulatthesametime.”(“Rootedness:

Publishedin1970,thenovelhasitssettinginblackcommunityinLorain,in1941,longbeforetheCivilRightsMovement.Inthosedays,blacknesswassynonymouswithugliness.Thedominantwhitecultureexerciseditshegemonyanddictatedstandardsofbeauty.Manyblackpeopleacceptedandinternalizedwhitevaluesanddevelopedself-contemptandself-hatredforthemselvesorotherblackpeople,makingsomeoftheirownpeoplevictimsandscapegoats.Tooverthrowwhiteculturalhegemonyandliberatethemselvesfromoppressionandself-oppression,theblackpeopleraisedthepoliticalsloganinthe1960s:

Morrison’snovelTheBluestEyesdepictstheperniciouspsychologicalimpactthatthedominantwhiteculturalvalueshavehadonblackpeople.
ThestorycentersaroundthetragiclifeofalittleblackgirlnamedPocolaBreedlove.TheBreedlovearethepoorestfamilyofthetown.Theyliveinastorefrontofanabandonedstore.Theplaceissouglythat”visitorswhodrivetothistinytownwonderwhyitha
