Whileitisestimatedthathairsheepcompriseonly10percentoftheworld'ssheeppopulation,theirnumbersaregrowing,especiallyintemperateclimatesliketheUnitedStates.Manyfactorsaredrivingtheincrease:

lackofprofitabilityinthewoolsector,paucityofsheepshearers,widespreaddevelopmentofanthelmintic-resistantworms,andtheoveralldesire（need）foreasy-caresheep.

虽然，据估计粗毛羊只占世界总羊数的10%，但是它们的数量在增长，特别是在气候温和的地区，如美国。

有许多种因素推动了这个增长：

羊毛利润低、缺少剪羊毛工人、广泛传播的耐药性蠕虫、对容易管理的羊的渴望等等。

本来，所有的羊都是粗毛羊。

摩福伦（欧洲盘羊），野羊的一个亚种，被认为是现代羊的两个祖先品种之一。

有角、短簇的红棕色的粗毛、柔软的底层绒毛、短尾巴。

毛用羊是为了获得柔软的底层绒毛而从野羊中选育出来的。

IntheU.S.,hairsheepbreedsincludesheepwithvirtuallynowoollyfibers,sheepthatshedtheirfleecesannually（anddon'trequireshearing）,andbreedswhosefleecescontaintoomuchhairtobesuitableforthecommercialwoolmarket.

在美国，粗毛羊包括以下几种：

几乎没有绒毛纤维的、羊毛一年脱落一次的、羊毛中粗毛比例太高适合适合于商业羊毛市场。

Fromapurelypracticalstandpoint,ahairsheepisgenerallyanysheepthatdoesn'trequireshearing.Thiscanbea"pure"hairsheeporitcanbeasheddingbreed.Someprimitivesheepbreedsalsoshedtheircoats（e.g.Soay,Shetland）.

HairsheepintheUnitedStatesareallofAfricanorigin.Thosethatoriginatefromthethin-tailedhairsheepofWestAfricadifferfromthosethatoriginatefromthefat-tailorfat-rumphairsheepofEastandSouthAfrica.ThemostpopularbreedsofhairsheepintheUnitedStatesarecompositebreeds,crossesbetweenpurehairsheepandconventionalwooledbreeds.

美国的粗毛羊都起源于非洲。

起源于西非的细尾粗毛羊，与起源于东非南非的肥尾肥臀粗毛羊不同。

AmericanBlackbelly：

In1904,theUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgriculture（USDA）inBeltsville（Maryland）importedasmallflockofBarbadosBlackbellysheepfromtheCaribbean.DescendentsofthesesheepwerelatercrossedwiththeMouflonandRambouilletresultinginabreeddifferentfromthoseoriginallyimportedandraisedintheCaribbean.

在1904年，美国农业部（USDA）在贝茨维尔（马里兰州）从加勒比海地区引进一小群巴巴多斯黑腹羊。

这些羊的后裔后来和摩福伦羊、兰布莱绵羊杂交，就形成了一种不同于起源于加勒比海的最初引进的羊的品种。

Whilethe"crosses"gobymanynames（e.g.Barbado）,theBarbadosBlackbellySheepAssociationInternationalhasdubbedthemtheAmericanBlackbelly,abreeddistinctfromtheBarbadosBlackbelly.

TheAmericanBlackbellyresemblestheBarbadosBlackbellyingeneralappearance,butwithanotableexception:

thepresenceofhornsontheramsandsometimesontheewes.Itwasthemassivehornsoftheramsthateventuallycaughttheattentionoftrophyhunters.

Other"exotic"breedsofhairsheephavesincebeendevelopedfromtheBarbadosBlackbellyandMouflon,inlcudingthePaintedDesertandBlackHawaiian.Whilesomeoftheseexotichairsheepareraisedforproductionpurposes,mostarelikelybeingpropagatedforhuntingreserves.

其它带有异国情调的粗毛羊，都曾经用巴巴多斯黑腹羊和摩福伦羊培育而成，包括彩色沙漠和黑夏威夷。

尽管某些这种异国情调的粗毛羊饲养目的是产肉，但是大多数很可能是为了狩猎服务而繁殖的。

TheBarbadosBlackbellyoriginatedontheCaribbeanislandofBarbados.Althoughitsexactoriginsareunknown,thebreedsurelyhasAfricanorigins.TheBarbadosBlackbellyisanattractivesheepofvariousshadesofbrown,withblackunderpartsandpoints,andabadgerface.Thesheepareleggyandresembleasmalldeerorantelopeinappearance.

巴巴多斯黑腹羊起源于巴巴多斯的加勒比海岛。

尽管其精确的起源尚不清楚，但是这个品种肯定有非洲的血缘。

巴巴多斯黑腹羊引人注目的地方是各种各样棕色的基调、腹部黑色或黑点、脸部像獾子。

除了对体内寄生虫的抵抗力比毛用羊要强，巴巴多斯黑腹羊还以繁殖性能而著称。

它们性成熟早、可常年配种、而且多产。

由于缺少传统品种的生产率和肌肉品质，黑腹羊在杂交组合中可以提高繁殖效率。

Few"true"BarbadosBlackbellysheepremainintheUnitedStates.Sofar,effortstorestoretheintegrityoftheoriginalbreedbyimportinggeneticsfromtheCaribbeanhavenotbeenfruitful.

在美国，只有很少的真正的巴巴多斯黑腹羊。
