ThisisthebodyofaletterIsenttoEdwardMcEwenafterbuyingabookonSaturday.Itisreasonablyself-explanatory,exceptformycommentsaboutthebowstring.ForanumberofyearsIhavedoubtedreconstructionsofChinesecrossbowswithtwolittlebarsoneitherlimbonthebellysideofthebows.Ifoundanexcavationreportwhichidentifiedtheshadowsintheearthoftheexcavationasstrutstogiveshapetoacanvasbow-cover.Thiswasclearinthedrawingsfromthesite.Sothestrutsexisted,butwerenotattachedtothebow.Thiswasintheexcavationoftheterracottawarriors.
Iwouldbeinterestedifanyonehasturnedupanymoreinformationonthismodelcrossbow,particularlyhowitwasreconstructed.

Thereconstructionofthecrossbowisproblematical.Themajorareaofcontroversy,frommyviewpoint,isthestring.Inthephotographofthechariotasexcavated(averyflatchariot),thebowisdetachedfromthestockandthestringisnotvisible.Thereconstructed(read"

)crossbowhasabronzebridleofcordconnectingittothestock.Theholeinthestockforthebridlehasatwistedstringrunthroughittiedateitherendtopointsonesixthofthewayfromtherespectivebowtips.Thisstringisapieceoftwistedbronzewireanditrunsstraightbetweenitsend-points.Theshootingstringisasmoothbronzeobjectwiththickerloopsateachendhookedoverthetipsofthebow.Theendloopsseemintegralastherearenovisibleknots.Thisthickerstringrunsoverandtouchesthetopofthestock.Thestockhasadecoratedlockandbutt-capwithasubstantialtriggerguard.ThestockhasaprofilesimilartolaterHancrossbowstock,withtheexceptionofitspistolgrip,whichisanunadornedverticalcylinderdroppingfromthestocktotherearofthetriggerguard.

Whenthedimensionsaredoubled,anideaofarealcrossbowisarrivedatwithouttoomuchtrouble.Thenockedarrowsthenareseentobejustunder28inchesandthebowwouldbeabout55incheslongmountedonastockofalmost31inches.Thecross-sectionsofthebowcanbeguessedfromthephotographsandtheysuggestabowwithbroadlenticularworkinglimbstaperingtotriangular(orpentagonal)tips.Thepointwherethebindingoccurslookstobewheretheworkinglimbstops.Thisbowisonthewaytoneedingreinforcingbonestripsatthenocks.
Twobarsprojectfromthefrontofthechariotonthecentreoftheleftside.Theyaretippedwithcurvinghooksofthetype,whichwerethoughoncetobemountedonthestockofthecrossbowtomountthebow.Thisiswherethecrossbowsitswhenitisnotinuse.Thebowisheldbythehooksandthetriggerguardleansagainsttheslopingfrontpanelofthechariot.Ifthestockwereslidbetweenthetwobars,withthebowunderneath,thenthearchercoulddrawthebowstringuptothelockmoreeasily.Ihadoftenwonderedhowastrongcrossbowcouldeverhavebeenbracedinachariot.
