(Applause.)MeetingyoungpeoplelikeLeahjustmakesmeinspired.It’sagoodwaytostarttheweek.AndallofthestudentsherewhoarediscoveringandexploringnewideasisoneofthereasonsIlovevisitingschoolslikeBladensburgHigh.AndsoIjustwanttocongratulateallofyouforthegreatworkthatyou’redoing.

Allofyouremindme,alltheseyoungpeoplehere,thatyoungpeopletodayareworkingoncoolerstuffthantheywerewhenIwasinhighschool.Inclassroomsacrossthecountry,studentsjustlikethestudentshere,they’reworkinghard,they’resettingtheirsightshigh.Andwe’vegottodoeverythingwecantomakesurethatallofyouhaveachancetosucceed.Andthat’swhyyouroutstandingprincipal,AishaMahoney,isworkingsohardatthisschool.(Applause.)That’swhyGovernorO’MalleyhasbeenworkingsohardtorepairoldschoolsandbuildnewonesacrossthestateofMaryland.Andthat’swhyI’mheretoday.Becauselastyear,welaunchedanationalcompetitiontoredesignAmerica’shighschoolsforthe21stcentury--the21stcenturyeconomy.AndI’mproudtosaythatyourhardworkherehaspaidoff,becauseoneofthewinnersisPrinceGeorge’sCounty.(Applause.)Goodjob.That’sright,youguyshavedonegreat.(Applause.)
Now,letmetellyouwhythisissoimportant.Manyoftheyoungpeoplehere,you’vegrownupinthemidstofoneoftheworsteconomiccrisesofourlifetimes.Andit’sbeenhardandit’sbeenpainful.Therearealotoffamiliesthatlosttheirhomes,lostjobs;
alotoffamiliesthatarestillhurtingoutthere.Buttheworkthatwe’vedone,thegroundworkthatwe’velaid,hascreatedasituationwherewe’removingintherightdirection.Ourbusinesseshavecreatedalmost9millionnewjobsoverthelastfouryears.Ourhighschoolgraduationrateisthehighestonrecord.Dropoutratesaregoingdown;
amongLatinos,thedropoutratehasbeencutinhalfsince2019.(Applause.)Moreyoungpeopleareearningcollegedegreesthaneverbefore.We’vebeenbringingtroopshomefromtwowars.Morethan7millionAmericanshavenowsignedupforhealthcoveragethroughtheAffordableCareAct.(Applause.)
Sowe’vebeenmakingprogress,butwe’vegotmoreworktodotomakesurethateveryoneoftheseyoungpeople,thateverybodywhoiswillingtoworkhardhasthechancetogetahead.We’vegottomakesurethatoureconomyworksforeverybody,notjustafew.We’vegottomakesureopportunityexistsforallpeople.Nomatterwhoyouare,nomatterwhereyoustartedout,you’vegottohaveconfidencethatifyouworkhardandtakeresponsibility,youcanmakeit.
Andthat’sthechancethatthiscountrygaveme.It’sthechancethatthiscountrygaveMichelle.Andthat’swhywe’reworkingsohardforwhatwecallanopportunityagenda--onethatgiveseverybodyashot.Andtherearefoursimplegoals:
Wewanttocreatenewjobs.Wewanttomakesurethatpeoplehavetheskillstofillthosejobs.Wewanttomakesureeveryyoungpersonhasaworld-classeducation.Andwewanttomakesurethatwerewardhardworkwiththingslikehealthcareyoucancountonandwagesyoucanliveon.
AndMarylandandGovernorO’Malleyhavebeenworkingalongsideusontheseissues,andIwanttogiveaspecialshout-outtotheMarylandlegislaturebecause,becauseofGovernorO’Malley’sleadership,youarehelpingtomakesurethatweareraisingmorepeople’swageswithyourpushtoraiseyourminimumwagerighthereinMaryland.(Applause.)We’reveryproudtoseethathappen.AndIhopeGovernorO’Malleyisgoingtosignitintolawsoon.GiveMarylandaraise.(Applause.)That’sgoodwork.
Butthemainfocushereisguaranteeingeveryyoungpersonhasaccesstoaworld-classeducation.Everysinglestudent.Now,thatstartsbeforehighschool.We’vegottostartattheyoungestagesbymakingsurewe’vegothigh-qualitypreschoolandotherearlylearningprogramsforeveryyoungchildinAmerica.(Applause.)Itmakesadifference.
We’vegottomakesurethateverystudenthasaccesstotheworld’sinformationandtheworld’sbesttechnology,andthat’swhywe’removingforwardwithaninitiativewecallConnectEDtofinallyconnect99percentofAmerica’sstudentstohigh-speedInternetinthenextfewyears.(Applause.)Itmeansthatwe’vegottoreinincollegecosts--becauseIwanttomakesurethatLeah,whenshegoestoschool,she’snotburdenedwithtoomuchdebt.(Applause.)Andwe’vegottomakeiteasiertorepaystudentloans--becausenoneoftheyoungpeoplehereshouldbedeniedahighereducationjustbecauseyourfamilyhastroubleaffordingit.Andaworld-classeducationmeanspreparingeveryyoungpersonwiththeskillstheyneedforcollege,foracareer,andforalifetimeofcitizenship.
Sowhatwedidwaswelaunchedanewcompetition,backedbyAmerica’sDepartmentsofEducationandLabor,tostartredesigningsomeofourhighschools.WecallitYouthCareerConnect.Andwe’reoffering$100millioninnewgrantstohelpschoolsandlocalpartnersdevelopandtestnewcurriculaandmodelsforsuccess.Wewanttoinvestinyourfuture.
Youguysareallcomingupinanagewhereyou’renotgoingtobeabletocompetewithpeopleacrosstownforgoodjobs--you’regoingtobecompetingwiththerestoftheworld.YoungpeopleinIndiaandChina,they’reallinterestedintryingtofigureouthowtheygetafootholdinthisworldeconomy.That’swhoyou’recompetingagainst.Now,I’mconfidentyoucanmatchorexceedanythingtheydo,butwedon’tdoitbyjustrestingonwhatwe’vedonebefore.We’vegottoout-workandout-innovateandout-hustleeverybodyelse.We’vegottothinkaboutnewwaysofdoingthings.
Andpartofourconcernhasbeenourhighschools,alotofthemweredesignedwithcurriculumsbasedonthe1940sand‘50sand‘60s,andhaven’tbeenupdated.Sotheideabehindthiscompetitionishowdowestartmakinghighschool,inparticular,moreinteresting,moreexciting,morerelevanttoyoungpeople.
Lastyear,forexample,IvisitedaschoolcalledP-TECH---thisisinBrooklyn--ahighschoolthatpartneredwithIBMandtheCityUniversityofNewYorktoofferitsstudentsnotonlyahighschooldiploma,butalsoanassociate’sdegreeincomputersystemsorelectromechanicalengineering.IBMsaidthatP-TECHgraduateswouldbethefirstinlineforjobs.
ThenIvisitedahighschoolinNashvillethatoffers“academies”wherestudentsfocusonaspecificsubjectarea--butthey’realsogettinghands-onexperiencerunningtheirowncreditunion,workingintheirownTVstudios,learning3Dprinting,tinkeringwiththeirownairplane--whichwasprettycool.Inevergottodothat.Ididgetmyownairplanelaterinlife.(Laughter.)AlthoughI’vegottogiveitback.(Laughter.)Idon’tgettokeepit.
ButthisisstuffIdidn’tgettodowhenIwasinhighschool--andIwishIhad.Butit’sstuffyouhavetoknowhowtodotoday,intoday’seconomy.Thingsaremovingfaster,they’remoresophisticated.
SowechallengedAmerica’shighschoolstolookatwhat’shappeninginaplacelikeP-TECH,lookatwhat’shappeningincitieslikeNashville,andthensaywhatcanyoudotomakesureyourstudentslearntheskillsthatbusinessesarelookingforinhigh-demandfields.Andweaskedhighschoolstodeveloppartnershipswithcollegesandemployers,andcreateclassesthatfocusonreal-lifeapplicationsforthefieldsofthefuture--fieldslikescienceandtechnologyandengineeringandmath.Andpartofthereasonwehavetodothisnowisbecauseothercountries,they’vegotalittlebitofaleadonusonsomeoftheseareas.
AcountrylikeGermanyrightnowfocusesongraduatingtheirhighschoolstudentswithatechnicaldegreeequivalentthatgivethemaheadstart.Sowe’reaskingschoolstolookintowhatplaceslikeGermanyaredoing.
Now,noteveryschoolthatentersintothiscompetitionforthe$100millionisgoingtowin--becausewedon’thaveenoughmoneyforeverybody,andwewanttoforceschoolstothinkhardandredesign,andwewanttorewardtheschoolsthatarebeingmostinnovativeandareactuallyprovingsomeoftheconceptsthatthey’retryingout.Butthegreatthingisthatthroughthiscompetition,schoolsacrossthecountrythatenteredhavechangedthewaytheypreparetheirstudents,andhavealreadymadeenormousimprovements,evenbeforetheygetthegrant.And,ultimately,wehadtochoosethetopYouthCareerConnectinitiatives.Today,I’mproudtosaythatschoolsacrossAmericaareputtingupsomeprettyimpressiveproposals.
Thewinnersacrosstheboardaredoingthekindsofstuffthatwillallowotherschoolstostartduplicatingwhatthey’redoing.ThewinnersinIndianapolisareexpandingtheircareerprepprogramstoencouragemoreyoungwomenandkidsfromdiversebackgroundstojoinourscienceandtechnologyworkforce.NewYorkCitylikesthatBrooklynhighschoolmodel,P-TECH,somuchthatthey’reusingtheirgranttofundtwomorejustlikeit,sothatstudentscangaintwodegreesatonceandgettheedgetheyneedintod
