ItwasnotonlyEnglandthatthoughtsoeither.Hughes'

sbookwasalsopublishedinAmerica,whereitwontheGalbraithprize,amajorliteraryaward.Butthen,in1963,SylviaPlath,ayoungAmericanpoetwhomhehadfirstmetatCambridgeUniversityin1956,andwhobecamehiswifeinthesummerofthatyear,committedsuicide.Hugheswasvilifiedforlongafterthat,especiallybyfeministsinAmerica.In1998,theyearhedied,Hughesbrokehisownself-imposedpublicsilenceabouttheirrelationshipinabookofloose-weavepoemscalled“BirthdayLetters〞.Inthisnewandexhilaratingcollectionofrealletters,Hughesreturnstotheissueofhisfirstwife'

sdeath,whichhecallshis“bigandunmanageableevent〞.Hefelthistalentmuffledbytheperpetualeavesdroppinguponhiseverymove.Notuntilhedecidedtopublishhisownaccountoftheirrelationshipdidtheburdenbegintolighten.
