Ancientpeoplebelievedthatafterthisday,rainfallincreasesbecausetherain-bringingDragonKinghasawakenedfromhiswintersleep.Awell-knownChinesephrasegoes,“Eryueer,longtaitou”,meaning“Ontheseconddayofthesecondlunarmonth,theDragonKingliftsitshead.”

ThefestivalcelebratesancientChineseagrarianculture,andwhilesomeofthetraditionalwaystocelebrateitarenolongerpractised,otherscontinuetoexist.

Themostfamoustraditionisgettingahaircut.Somebelievethatgoingtothebarber’sonthisdaycanhelpthemgetridofbadluck,whileothersbelievegettingahaircutduringthefirstmonthofthelunarcalendarbringsbadluck.Anothersayingwarnsthatcuttingyourhairinthefirstmonthwillcauseyouruncletodie.Althoughtodayfewpayattentiontoit,itwasonceatraditiontolineupoutsidebarbershopsonthedayofLongtaitou.

PeopleeattofuballsinChina’sFujianProvinceduringthefestival,andoftenmaketofuandvegetableballstoprayforthefamilyandbusiness.FriedbeansarethetraditionalfestivalfoodforpeopleinpartsofShandongProvince.EatingChengyaocakes,whicharemadewithstickyrice,duringthefestivalisatraditioninSuzhou,China’sJiangsuProvince,owingtothesaying,“IfyoueatChengyaocakesonLongtaitou,yourwaistwon’thurtalltheyear.”Meanwhileotherfoods,likedumplings,springrollsandpopcorn,arenamedafterdragonbodypartstomarktheday.Noodlesareadragon’sbeard（longxu）,dumplingsareadragon’sears（longer）,springrollsareadragon’sscales（longlin）,andpopcornisadragon’sseeds（longzi）.
