Thesaying“it’sbettertohavelovedandlostthannevertohavelovedatall”istrue,scientistssay.Thepainoflostchanceslastsfarlongerthantheshorttermregretofdoingsomethingwrong,accordingtoastudybytwoU.S.universities.Andpainfulastheyare,regretscanactuallyurgeusontofuturesuccess,byensuringthatwetakechancesinthefuturetoavoidmissingoutagain.
Theresearchersidentifiedtwodifferenttypesofregrets—actionregrets,basedonsomethingthepersonhasdone,andinactionregrets,whichconcernsomethingapersonhasn’tdonebutwishesheorshehad.
Theysurveyed370adultswhowereaskedtodiscussonestrongregretindetail,eitheranactionorinactionregret,andtosayhowlongthepainlastedafterwards.Themostcommonregretsconcernedlove,educationandwork.
Romanticregretsprovedparticularlypainful,withmanyofthoseinterviewedthinkingaboutlostchancesforpotentialromances,orrelationshipsthathadn’tworkedout.Theresults,publishedinthejournalSAGE,revealedthatwhileactionregretswereverypainful,theydidn’tlastaslongasinactionregrets.
