‘Odear,’saidScrapman.Winstonwasworkinglate.Solate,thathewashavinghissupperheatedoveragasringintheshed.

Theycoulddriverocketsandwalkonthemoonansavepeoplefromfiresandfloodsandearthquakes.Scrapmanlovedlookingatthepictures,buthehadtowaituntilEmmacameroundtofindoutwhatthestorieswereabout.

ScrapcatsawthatScrapmanwassad,sohewentandsatbesidehim.

Winstonopenedapropertinofbeansandheputthetinofcatfoodinlooking,Scrapmantookitout.

He’dboughtitasatreatforPatch.PatchwasEmma’scat.HelikedtocomeandplaywithScrapcatwhileEmmawasatschool.He’dclimbinthroughthewindowwhenWinstonandScrapmanwerebusy.

Thenhe’dshowScrapcathowtodousefulcatthings,likechasingpiecesofstrigandhidingthingsundertheworkbench.

Now,youmaybewonderingwhyWinstonandScrapmanweresobusy.TheywereworkingroundtheclockonWinston’sincredibleinvention.

Itwasawonderfulflyingmachinethatdidn’tneedpetroltomakeitfly.Itwasalmostfinished.Justafewmorenutsandbotstofixanditwouldbereadyforatestflight.

Atlast,thedaycameforthefirsttestflight.Winstonhadclearedarunwaythroughthescrap-yard.

Therunwayledoutintoafield,andbeyondthattherewasanotherfield,sotherewasplentyofroomtotakeoff.

Thatmorning,Winstontookoffoneofhissocksandhungitonapoletotestthewinddirection.

Itwasaneastwind,steadyandstrong,justrightfortestingaplane.

EmmaarrivedearlywithPatch.She’dbroughtaspecialpicnicandabigbottleoffizzylemonadetocelebrateaftertheflight.ShefoundWinstonandScrapmanbusyunderneaththemachine,makingsomelast-minutechecks.Scrapcatwasrunninginandoutthroughhisscrapflapgivingup-to-the-minutereportsontheweather.

Byteno’clockinthemorning,Winstonsaidthateverythingwasready.

Itwasgoingtobecoldupthereinthesky,soheputonathickjacketwithawoollyliningoverhisoveralls.Andhewrotehisspecialgogglestoprotecthiseyesfromthewind.

‘Openthedoors,’hesaidproudlytoScrapman.’Standwellback,’hesaidtoEmmaandPatch.

Andthen,verycarefully,WinstonandScrapmanpushedtheflyingmachineoutintotheopen.

Asmallcrowdhadgatheredoutside.Peoplehadheardabouttheflyingmachine.Theyhadcometoshareintheexcitementofseeingittakeoffforthefirsttime.

Winstonheldupahandforsilence.’Welcome,’hesaid.Thenhesaidsomethingaboutthisbeinga‘historicoccasion’andeveryoneclappedandsomepeoplecheered.Onelittleboywavedthesockonthepolelikeaflag.

WinstonclimbedupintotheflyingmachineandScrapmanstartedtoclimbupbehindhim.

‘Stop.’saidWinston.’Youcan’tcomewithme,Scrapman.You’retoobig.Themachinecouldnevergetoffthegroundwithyouinit.’’

Winstontestedtheflapsandjiggledthejoystickandlookedinhismirrorstocheckthateverythingwasworkingproperly.Thenhepulleddownhisgogglesandturneduphiscollar.Hewavedproudlytothecrowd.

‘Chocksaway.’hecalledout,andEmmaandScrapmanpulledoutthebricksfromunderthewheels.

Winstonstartedtopedal.Theflyingmachinebegantomoveforward.

Hepedalledfasterandfasterandthemachinepickedupspeed.Everyoneinthecrowdheldtheirbreathastheflyingmachineshotdowntherunway.Itgotfasterandfaster.Winstonwaspedalinglikemadandgoingredintheface.

Themachinereachedthefirstfield.Itwasgoingveryfastindeed,butitdidn’ttakeoff.Itreachedthes
