It’stheanswertoldbylines(队)thatstretched(伸展,拉长)aroundschoolsandchurchesinnumbers(数以百计的)thisnationhasneverseen,bypeoplewhowaitedthreehoursandfourhours,manyfortheveryfirsttimeintheirlives,becausetheybelievedthatthistimemustbedifferent,thattheirvoicecouldbethatdifference.

It’stheanswerspokenbyyoungandold,richandpoor,Democrat(民主党党员,democraticparty)andRepublican(共和党党员,republicanparty),black,white,Hispanic(指拉美裔,西班牙及其其他说西班牙语国家的),Asian(亚裔),NativeAmerican(原住民),gay(同性恋者),straight(异性恋者),disabled(残疾人)andnotdisabled–AmericanswhosentamessagetotheworldthatwehaveneverbeenacollectionofindividualsoracollectionofRedStatesandBlueStates:

weare,andalwayswillbe,theUnitedStatesofAmerica.

It’stheanswerthatledthosewhohavebeentoldforsolongbysomanytobecynical(偾世嫉俗的)andfearful(忧虑的)anddoubtful(怀疑的)ofwhatwecanachievetoputtheirhandsonthearc(弧)ofhistoryandbend(使转到新的方向)itoncemoretowardthehopeofabetterday.

It’sbeenalongtimecoming,buttonight,becauseofwhatwedidonthisday,inthiselection,atthisdefining(下定义)moment,changehascometoAmerica.

Alittlebitearlierthisevening,Ijustreceivedanextraordinarily(非常的,格外的)gracious(大方的)callfromSenator(参议员)McCain(麦凯恩).Hefoughtlongandhardinthiscampaign,andhe’sfoughtevenlongerandharderforthecountryheloves.Hehasendured(忍受,持续)sacrifices(牺牲)forAmericathatmostofuscannotbegintoimagine,andwearebetterofffortheservicerendered(回报,归还)bythisbraveandselflessleader.Icongratulatehim,IcongratulateGovernor(州长)Palinforalltheyhaveachieved,andIlookforwardtoworkingwiththemtorenewthisnation’spromiseinthemonthsahead.

Iwanttothankmypartnerinthisjourney(旅程),amanwhocampaignedfromhisheartandspokeforthemenandwomenhegrewupwithonthestreetsofScranton(斯克兰顿)androdewithonthattrainhometoDelaware(特拉华),theVicePresident-elect(当选总统)oftheUnitedStates,JoeBiden.

Thebestpoliticalcampaign,Ithink,inthehistoryoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Tomychiefstrategist(首席策划师)DavidAxelrodwho’sbeenapartnerwithmeeverystepoftheway.Tothebestcampaignteameverassembled集合,聚集)inthehistoryofpolitics–youmadethishappen,andIamforevergratefulforwhatyou’vesacrificedtogetitdone.

Butaboveall,Iwillneverforgetwhothisvictorytrulybelongsto–itbelongstoyou.Itbelongstoyou.

Iwasneverthelikeliest(最有可能的,likely)candidateforthisoffice.Wedidn’tstartwithmuchmoneyormanyendorsements(支持,赞同).Ourcampaignwasnothatched(孵化,策划)inthehallsofWashington–itbeganinthebackyardsofDesMoinesandthelivingroomsofConcordandthefrontporches(门廊)ofCharleston.

Itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhoduginto(dig挖)whatlittlesavingstheyhadtogivefivedollars,tendollarsandtwentydollarstothiscause.Itgrewstrengthfromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemyth(神话)oftheirgeneration’sapathy(缺乏兴趣,无积极性,漠不关心,无动于衷);

wholefttheirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep.Itdrew(抽,拔出draw)strength(人力)fromthenot-so-youngpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorching(极热的)heattoknockonthedoorsofperfectstrangers;

fromthemillionsofAmericanswhovolunteered,andorganized,andprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslater,agovernmentofthepeople,bythepeopleandforthepeoplehasnotperished(毁灭,死亡)fromthisEarth.Thisisyourvictory.

Iknowyoudidn’tdothisjusttowinanelectionandIknowyoudidn’tdoitforme.Youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormity(巨大,极大)ofthetaskthatliesahead.Forevenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringarethegreatestofourlifetime–twowars,aplanet(行星)inperil(严重危险),theworstfinancialcrisisinacentury.Evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveAmericanswakingupinthedeserts(沙漠)ofIraqandthemountainsofAfghanistantorisktheirlivesforus.Therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeaftertheirchildrenfallasleepandwonderhowthey’llmakethemortgage(抵押),orpaytheirdoctor’sbills,orsaveenoughforcollegeeducation.Thereisnewenergytoharness(控制及利用以生产)andnewjobstobecreated;

newschoolstobuildandthreatstomeetandalliances(结盟)torepair.

Theroadaheadwillbelong.Ourclimbwillbesteep(陡峭的).Wemaynotgetthereinoneyearorevenoneterm(任期),butAmerica–IhaveneverbeenmorehopefulthanIamtonightthatwewillgetthere.Ipromiseyou–weasapeoplewillgetthere.

Therewillbeset-backs(妨碍发展的事物)andfalsestarts.Therearemanywhowon’tagreewitheverydecisionorpolicyImakeasPresident,andweknowthatgovernmentcan’tsolveeveryproblem.ButIwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.Iwilllistentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.Andaboveall,Iwillaskyoujoinintheworkofremakingthisnationtheonlywayit’sbeendoneinAmericafortwo-hundredandtwenty-oneyears–blockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycallousedhand.

Whatbegantwenty-onemonthsagointhedepthsofwintercannotendonthisautumnnight.Thisvictoryaloneisnotthechangeweseek–itisonlythechanceforustomakethatchange.Andthatcannothappenifwegobacktothewaythingswere.Itcannothappenwithoutyou,withoutanewspiritofservice,anewspiritofsacrifice.

Soletussummon(召唤)anewspiritofpatriotism(爱国精神);

ofserviceandresponsibilitywhereeachofusresolvestopitchinandworkharderandlookafternotonlyourselves,buteachother.Letusrememberthatifthisfinancialcrisistaughtusanything,it’sthatwecannothaveathrivingWallStreetwhileMainStreetsuffers–inthiscountry,weriseorfallasonenation,asonepeople.

Letusresistthetemptation(劝诱,诱惑)tofallbackonthesamepartisanship(党派)andpettiness(鸡毛蒜皮的小事)andimmaturity(不成熟)thathaspoisoned(毒害)ourpoliticsforsolong.Letusrememberthatitwasamanfromthisstatewhofirstcarriedthebanner(横幅,旗帜FLAG)oftheRepublicanPartytotheWhiteHouse–apartyfoundedonthevaluesofself-reliance(自立),individualliberty(个人自由),andnationalunity.Thosearevaluesweallshare,andwhiletheDemocraticPartyhaswonagreatvictorytonight,wedosowithameasureofhumility(谦虚的态度,谦逊)anddeterminationtoheal(康复,完结)thedividesthathaveheldbackourprogress.AsLincolnsaidtoanationfarmoredividedthanours,“Wearenotenemies,butfriends…thoughpassionmayhavestrained,itmustnotbreakourbondsofaffection.”AndtothoseAmericanswhosesupportIhaveyettoearn–Imaynothavewonyourvote,butIhearyourvoices,Ineedyourhelp,andIwillbeyourPresidenttoo.

Andtoallthosewatchingtonightfrombeyondourshores,fromparliaments(国会)andpalaces(皇宫)tothosewhoarehuddledaroundradiosintheforgottencornersofourworld–ourstoriesaresingular,butourdestiny(命运)isshared,andanewdawnofAmericanleadershipisathand.Tothosewhowouldtearthisworlddown–wewilldefeatyou.Tothosewhoseekpeaceandsecurity–wesupportyou.AndtoallthosewhohavewonderedifAmerica’sbeacon(灯塔,灯标,烽火)stillburnsasbright–tonightweprovedoncemorethatthetruestrengthofournationcomesnotfromourthemight(威力)ofourarmsorthescaleofourwealth,butfromtheenduring(持续的,持久的)powerofourideals:

democracy(民主),liberty,opportunity,andunyieldinghope.

Forthatisthetruegenius(特点,精神,原则,天才,创造力)ofAmerica–thatAmericacanchange.Ourunioncanbeperfected.Andwhatwehavealreadyachievedgivesushopeforwhatwecanandmustachievetomorrow.

Thiselectionhadmanyfirstsandmanystoriesthatwillbetoldforgenerations.Butonethat’sonmymindtonightisaboutawomanwhocast(投)herballot(选票)inAtlanta.She’salotlikethemillionsofotherswhostoodinlinetomaketheirvoiceheardinthiselectionexceptforonething–AnnNixonCooperis106yearsold.

Shewasbornjustageneration(代)pastslavery(奴隶制,slaver);

atimewhentherewerenocarsontheroadorplanesinthesky;

whensomeonelikehercouldn’tvotefortworeasons–becauseshewasawomanandbecauseofthecolorofherskin.

Andtonight,Ithinkaboutallthatshe’sseenthroughouthercenturyinAmerica–theheartacheandthehope;

thestruggleandtheprogress;

thetimesweweretoldthatwecan’t,andthepeoplewhopressedonwiththatAmericancreed(信条):
