Thenewresearchexploredthedisclosureondata-sharingby200,000websites.TheseincludedtheArkansasstategovernmenthomepageandtheCountryMusicsite.Thestudyanalyzedhowthesesitesshareddatawiththirdparties.Suchrecipientsofyourdatacouldbeadvertisersorcompaniesthatmakemoneybysellingpersonaldata.Thestudyalsoexaminedhowthosesiteshaddescribedtheirpolicyforprotectingthedataprivacy.

TimothyLibert,whoworksatOxfordUniversity,studiesdataprivacy.Forthisanalysis,heusedasoftwaretoolcalledwebXray.Ittracked1.8milliondatasharedbyeachofthosewebsiteswiththird-partydatacollectors.Only14.8%ofthosedatawenttothirdpartiesthatwerenamedinthesitesprivacypolicies.

Datathatweretransferredtowidelyfamiliarthirdparties—Google,FacebookandTwitter—weremorelikelytobeleakedthanthoseweretransferredtounknownparties.Libertfoundthat38.3%ofdatasenttoGooglehadbeenleaked.

Evenifawebsitelistedallofthethirdpartiesitsharedyourdatawith,usersstillmightneverlearnhowwidelytheirdatahadbeenshared.Why?
