Theadditionofexternalperipheralscontinuedtobeconstrainedbyportavailability.Thelack
ofabidirectional,low-cost,low-to-midspeedperipheralbusheldbackthecreativeproliferationofperipheralssuchasstoragedevices,answeringmachines,scanners,PDA’s,
keyboards,andmice.Existinginterconnectswereoptimizedforoneortwopointproducts.As
eachnewfunctionorcapabilitywasaddedtothePC,anewinterfacehadbeendefinedto
addressthisneed.
Initially,USBprovidedtwospeeds(12Mb/sand1.5Mb/s)thatperipheralscoulduse.AsPCsbecameincreasinglypowerfulandabletoprocesslargeramountsofdata,usersneededtogetmoreandmoredataintoandoutoftheirPCs.ThisledtothedefinitionoftheUSB2.0specificationin2000toprovideathirdtransferrateof480Mb/swhileretainingbackwardcompatibility.In2005,withwirelesstechnologiesbecomingmoreandmorecapable,WirelessUSBwasintroducedtoprovideanewcablefreecapabilitytoUSB.
USBisthemostsuccessfulPCperipheralinterconnecteverdefinedandithasmigratedheavilyintotheCEandMobilesegments.In2006aloneover2billionUSBdeviceswereshippedandthereareover6billionUSBproductsintheinstalledbasetoday.Endusers“know”whatUSBis.Productdevelopersunderstandtheinfrastructureandinterfacesnecessarytobuildasuccessfulproduct.
USBhasgonebeyondjustbeingawaytoconnectperipheralstoPCs.PrintersuseUSBto
interfacedirectlytocameras.PDAsuseUSBconnectedkeyboardsandmice.TheUSBOn-The-Godefinitionprovidesawayfortwodualrolecapabledevicestobeconnectedandnegotiatewhichonewilloperateasthe“host.”USB,asaprotocol,isalsobeingpickedupandusedinmanynontraditionalapplicationssuchasindustrialautomation.
Now,astechnologyinnovationmarchesforward,newkindsofdevices,mediaformats,andlargeinexpensivestorageareconverging.Theyrequiresignificantlymorebusbandwidthtomaintaintheinteractiveexperienceusershavecometoexpect.HDCamcorderswillhavetensofgigabytesofstoragethattheuserwillwanttomovetotheirPCforediting,viewing,andarchiving.Furthermoreexistingdeviceslikestillimagecamerascontinuetoevolveandareincreasingtheirstoragecapacitytoholdevenmoreuncompressedimages.Downloadinghundredsoreventhousandsof10MB,orlarger,rawimagesfromadigitalcamerawillbeatimeconsumingprocessunlessthetransferrateisincreased.Inaddition,userapplicationsdemandahigherperformanceconnectionbetweenthePCandtheseincreasinglysophisticatedperipherals.USB3.0addressesthisneedbyaddinganevenhighertransferratetomatchthesenewusagesanddevices.
Thus,USB(wiredorwireless)continuestobetheanswertoconnectivityforPC,Consumer
Electronics,andMobilearchitectures.Itisafast,bidirectional,low-cost,dynamicallyattachableinterfacethatisconsistentwiththerequirementsofthePCplatformsoftodayandtomorrow.
1.2ObjectiveoftheSpecification
ThisdocumentdefinesthenextgenerationUSBindustry-standard,USB3.0.Thespecificationdescribestheprotocoldefinition,typesoftransactions,busmanagement,andtheprogramminginterfacerequiredtodesignandbuildsystemsandperipheralsthatarecompliantwiththisspecification
USB3.0’sgoalremainstoenabledevicesfromdifferentvendorstointeroperateinanopen
architecture,whilemaintainingandleveragingtheexistingUSBinfrastructure(devicedrivers,softwareinterfaces,etc.).ThespecificationisintendedasanenhancementtothePCarchitecture,spanningportable,businessdesktop,andhomeenvironments,aswellassimpledevice-to-devicecommunications.ItisintendedthatthespecificationallowsystemOEMsandperipheraldevelopersadequateroomforproductversatilityandmarketdifferentiationwithouttheburdenofcarryingobsoleteinterfacesorlosingcompatibility.
1.3ScopeoftheDocument
Thespecificationisprimarilytargetedatperipheraldevelopersandplatform/adapterdevelopers,butprovidesvaluableinformationforplatformoperatingsystem/BIOS/devicedriver,adapterIHVs/ISVs,andsystemOEMs.Thisspecificationcanbeusedfordevelopingnewproductsandassociatedsoftware.

Specification.Specifically,USB3.0devicesmustimplementdeviceframeworkcommandsanddescriptorsasdefinedintheUSB2.0Specification.
1.4USBProductCompliance
AdoptersoftheUSB3.0specificationhavesignedtheUSB3.0AdoptersAgreement,which
providesthemaccesstoareasonableandnondiscriminatory(RANDZ)licensefromthePromotersandotherAdopterstocertainintellectualpropertycontainedinproductsthatarecompliantwiththeUSB3.0specification.AdopterscandemonstratecompliancewiththespecificationthroughthetestingprogramasdefinedbytheUSBImplementersForum.ProductsthatdemonstratecompliancewiththespecificationwillbegrantedcertainrightstousetheUSBImplementersForumlogosasdefinedinthelogolicense.

1.6DesignGoals
USB3.0isthenextevolutionarystepforwiredUSB.ThegoalisthatendusersviewitasthesameasUSB2.0,justfaster.Severalkeydesignareastomeetthisgoalarelistedbelow:
•PreservetheUSBmodelofsmarthostandsimpledevice.
•LeveragetheexistingUSBinfrastructure.ThereareavastnumberofUSBproductsinusetoday.Alargepartoftheirsuccesscanbetracedtotheexistenceofstablesoftwareinterfaces,easilydevelopedsoftwaredevicedrivers,andanumberofgenericstandarddeviceclassdrivers(HID,massstorage,audio,etc.).SuperSpeedUSBdevicesaredesignedtokeepthissoftwareinfrastructureintactsothatdevelopersofperipheralscancontinuetousethesameinterfacesandleveragealloftheirexistingdevelopmentwork.
•Significantlyimprovepowermanagement.Reducetheactivepowerwhensendingdataandreduceidlepowerbyprovidingarichersetofpowermanagementmechanismstoallowdevicestodrivethebusintolowerpowerstates.
•EaseofusehasalwaysbeenandremainsakeydesigngoalforallvarietiesofUSB.
•Preservetheinvestment.TherearealargenumberofPCsinusethatsupportonlyUSB2.0.TherearealargernumberofUSB2.0peripheralsinuse.RetainingbackwardcompatibilityattheType-AconnectortoallowSuperSpeeddevicestobeused,albeitatalowerspeed,withUSB2.0PCsandallowhighspeeddeviceswiththeirexistingcablestobeconnectedtotheUSB3.0SuperSpeedType-Aconnectors.
