  iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportantrespectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.injuneof1919,thefirstpresidentofyenchinguniversity,johnleightonstuart,wassettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementaddressontheseverygrounds.attheappointedhour,heappeared,butnostudentsappeared.theywerealloutleadingthemay4thmovementforchina'

  overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan20,000students.yourgraduatesarespreadthroughoutchinaandaroundtheworld.youhavebuiltthelargestuniversitylibraryinallofasia.lastyear,20percentofyourgraduateswentabroadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmathandsciencemajors.andinthisanniversaryyear,morethanamillionpeopleinchina,asia,andbeyondhaveloggedontoyourwebsite.atthedawnofanewcentury,thisuniversityisleadingchinaintothefuture.
