In1839,Hillheldacompetitiontodesignallthepostalfacility.Thewinningstamp19.describingtheyoungqueen’sprofilecamefromoneWilliamWyon,whobasedthedesignonamedalhecreatedtocelebratehisfirstvisittoLondon.

The“PennyBlack”stampwentonsaleonMay1,1840.Itwasanimmediate20.Suddenly,thecountryseemedalotsmaller.Thepennyblack’sdesignwassowellreceivedthatitremainedinuseforfortyyear.
