Thentheoldmansaid,`Driveallthehorsesintotheriver,and
choosetheonethatswimsacross.'
SoSigurddrovethem,andonlyoneswamacross.Sigurdchose

hisnamewasGrani,andhecameofSleipnir'
sbreed,andwas
thebesthorseintheworld.ForSleipnirwasthehorseofOdin,the
GodoftheNorth,andwasasswiftasthewind.
ButadayortwolaterhistutorsaidtoSigurd,`Thereisagreat
treasureofgoldhiddennotfarfromhere,anditwouldbecomeyou
towinit.'
ButSigurdanswered,`Ihaveheardstoriesofthattreasure,and
IknowthatthedragonFafnirguardsit,andheissohugeand
wickedthatnomandarestogonearhim.'
`Heisnobiggerthanotherdragons,'
saidthetutor,`andifyou
wereasbraveasyourfatheryouwouldnotfearhim.'
`Iamnocoward,'
saysSigurd;
`whydoyouwantmetofight
withthisdragon?
Thenhistutor,whosenamewasRegin,toldhimthatallthis
greathoardofredgoldhadoncebelongedtohisownfather.And
hisfatherhadthreesons--thefirstwasFafnir,theDragon;
thenext
wasOtter,whocouldputontheshapeofanotterwhenheliked;
andthenextwashimself,Regin,andhewasagreatsmithand
makerofswords.
NowtherewasatthattimeadwarfcalledAndvari,wholivedin
apoolbeneathawaterfall,andtherehehadhiddenagreathoardof
gold.AndonedayOtterhadbeenfishingthere,andhadkilleda
salmonandeatenit,andwassleeping,likeanotter,onastone.
Thensomeonecameby,andthrewastoneattheotterandkilledit,
andflayedofftheskin,andtookittothehouseofOtter'
sfather.
Thenheknewhissonwasdead,andtopunishthepersonwhohad
killedhimhesaidhemusthavetheOtter'
sskinfilledwithgold,
andcoveredalloverwithredgold,oritshouldgoworsewithhim.
ThenthepersonwhohadkilledOtterwentdownandcaughtthe
Dwarfwhoownedallthetreasureandtookitfromhim.
Onlyoneringwasleft,whichtheDwarfwore,andeventhat
wastakenfromhim.
ThenthepoorDwarfwasveryangry,andheprayedthatthe
goldmightneverbringanybutbadlucktoallthemenwhomight
ownit,forever.
Thentheotterskinwasfilledwithgoldandcoveredwithgold,
allbutonehair,andthatwascoveredwiththepoorDwarf'
slast
ring.
Butitbroughtgoodlucktonobody.FirstFafnir,theDragon,
killedhisownfather,andthenhewentandwallowedonthe
gold,andwouldlethisbrotherhavenone,andnomandaredgo
nearit.
WhenSigurdheardthestoryhesaidtoRegin:
`MakemeagoodswordthatImaykillthisDragon.'
SoReginmadeasword,andSigurdtrieditwithablowona
lumpofiron,andtheswordbroke.
Anotherswordhemade,andSigurdbrokethattoo.
ThenSigurdwenttohismother,andaskedforthebrokenpieces
ofhisfather'
sblade,andgavethemtoRegin.Andhehammered
andwroughtthemintoanewsword,sosharpthatfireseemedto
burnalongitsedges.
Sigurdtriedthisbladeonthelumpofiron,anditdidnotbreak,
butsplittheironintwo.Thenhethrewalockofwoolintothe
river,andwhenitfloateddownagainstthesworditwascutinto
twopieces.SoSigurdsaidthatswordwoulddo.Butbeforehe
wentagainsttheDragonheledanarmytofightthemenwhohad
killedhisfather,andheslewtheirKing,andtookallhiswealth,
andwenthome.
Whenhehadbeenathomeafewdays,herodeoutwithRegin
onemorningtotheheathwheretheDragonusedtolie.Thenhe
sawthetrackwhichtheDragonmadewhenhewenttoacliffto
drink,andthetrackwasasifagreatriverhadrolledalongand
leftadeepvalley.
ThenSigurdwentdownintothatdeepplace,anddugmanypits
init,andinoneofthepitshelayhiddenwithhissworddrawn.
Therehewaited,andpresentlytheearthbegantoshakewiththe
weightoftheDragonashecrawledtothewater.Andacloudof
venomflewbeforehimashesnortedandroared,sothatitwould
havebeendeathtostandbeforehim.
ButSigurdwaitedtillhalfofhimhadcrawledoverthepit,and
thenhethrusttheswordGramrightintohisveryheart.
ThentheDragonlashedwithhistailtillstonesbrokeandtrees
crashedabouthim.
Thenhespoke,ashedied,andsaid:
`Whoeverthouartthathastslainmethisgoldshallbethyruin,
andtheruinofallwhoownit.'
Sigurdsaid:
`IwouldtouchnoneofitifbylosingitIshouldneverdie.But
allmendie,andnobravemanletsdeathfrightenhimfromhis
desire.Diethou,Fafnir,'
andthenFafnirdied.
AndafterthatSigurdwascalledFafnir'
sBane,andDragonslayer.
ThenSigurdrodeback,andmetRegin,andReginaskedhimto
roastFafnir'
sheartandlethimtasteofit.
SoSigurdputtheheartofFafnironastake,androastedit.But
itchancedthathetoucheditwithhisfinger,anditburnedhim.Then
heputhisfingerinhismouth,andsotastedtheheartofFafnir.
Thenimmediatelyheunderstoodthelanguageofbirds,andhe
heardtheWoodpeckerssay:
`ThereisSigurdroastingFafnir'
sheartforanother,whenhe
shouldtasteofithimselfandlearnallwisdom.'
Thenextbirdsaid:
`ThereliesRegin,readytobetraySigurd,whotrustshim.'
Thethirdbirdsaid:
`LethimcutoffRegin'
shead,andkeepallthegoldtohimself.'
Thefourthbirdsaid:
`Thatlethimdo,andthenrideoverHindfell,totheplacewhere
Brynhildsleeps.'
WhenSigurdheardallthis,andhowReginwasplottingto
betrayhim,hecutoffRegin'
sheadwithoneblowofthesword

ThenSigurdrememberedhowthestorywentthatsomewhere,
faraway,therewasabeautifulladyenchanted.Shewasundera
spell,sothatshemustalwayssleepinacastlesurroundedbyflaming
fire;
thereshemustsleepforevertilltherecameaknightwho
wouldridethroughthefireandwakenher.Therehedetermined
togo,butfirstheroderightdownthehorribletrailofFafnir.And
Fafnirhadlivedinacavewithirondoors,acavedugdeepdown
intheearth,andfullofgoldbracelets,andcrowns,andrings;
and
there,too,SigurdfoundtheHelmofDread,agoldenhelmet,and
whoeverwearsitisinvisible.Allthesehepiledonthebackofthe
goodhorseGrani,andthenherodesouthtoHindfell.
Nowitwasnight,andonthecrestofthehillSigurdsawared
fireblazingupintothesky,andwithintheflameacastle,anda
banneronthetopmosttower.ThenhesetthehorseGraniatthe
fire,andheleapedthroughitlightly,asifithadbeenthroughthe
heather.SoSigurdwentwithinthecastledoor,andtherehesaw
someonesleeping,cladallinarm
