Whatiscriticalthinking?

Toacertaindegree,it’samatteroflogic（逻辑）—ofbeingabletospotweaknessesinotherpeople’sargumentandtoavoidtheminyourown,italsoincludesrelatedskillssuchasdistinguishingfactfromopinionandassessingthesoundnessofevidence.

Inthebroadsense,criticalthinkingisfocused,organizedthinking—theabilitytoseeclearlytheirrelationshipsamongideas.71Thegreatestthinkers,scientistsandinventorshaveoftentakentheirinformationthatwasreadilyavailableandputittogetherdifferentlytoproducenewideasthat,too,iscriticalthinking.

72Astheclassgoeson,forexample,youwillprobablyspendagooddealoftimeorganizingyourspeeches.Whilethismayseemlikeapurelymechanical（机械的）exercise,itiscloselyconnectedwithcriticalthinking.Ifthestructureofyourspeechislooseandconfused,chancesarethatyourthinkingisalsodisorderedandconfused.If,ontheotherhand,thestructureisclear,thereisagoodchanceyourthinkingistoo.Organizingaspeechisnotamatterofarrangingtheideasyoualreadyhave.73
