sscientifictrainingandnatureprompted
himtoinvestigatethesubstaneefurther.Incorporatingpotassiumdichromateandalcoholintotheanilineatvariousstagesoftheexperimentalprocess,hefinallyproducedadeeppurplesolution.

PerkinoriginallynamedhisdyeTyrianPurple,butitlaterbecamecommonlyknownasmauve（fromtheFrenchfortheplantusedtomakethecolourviolet）.HeaskedadviceofScottishdyeworksownerRobertPullar,whoassuredhimthatmanufacturingthedyewouldbewellworthitifthecoulourremainedfast（i.e.wouldnotfade）andthecostwasrelativelylow.So,overthefierceobjectionsofhismentorHofmann,heleftcollegetogivebirthtothemodernchemicalindustry.
