I’veneverbeenaskedthatbefore.Urn,Ithinkthattheprerequisiteobviouslyiscuriosity.Ithinkthat’sthe,er,anaturalone,notanassumedone.Ithinkthepeoplewhohave,um,donemyjob—andthegraveyardoftheBBCislitteredwiththem,theirtombstonesarethere,youknow—whofailedtohavebeenbecausebasicallythey’venotbeenjournalists.Um,mytrainingwasinjournalism.I’vebeen26yearsajournalistander,tobeajournalistarguesthatyoulikemeetingpeopletostartwith,andalsoyouwanttofindoutaboutthem.Sothat’stheprerequisite.Afterthat,Ithinkthere’ssomethingelsethatcomesintoit,intoplay,andIthink,again,mostsuccessfuljournalistshaveit—it’sacuriouskindofaffinitywithpeople,it’sanabilitytogetonwithpeople,it’sakindofbodywarmth,ifyoulike.Ifyouknewthesecretofitandcouldbottleitandsellit,you’dmakeafortune.

Interviewer:

Whenyou’vedoneaninterviewyourself,howdoyoufeelwhetherit’sbeenagoodinterviewornotagoodinterview?

Parkinson:

Icanneverreallytell,er,onair.Ihavetowatchitback,becausetelevisiondependssomuchonyourdirectorgettingtherightshot,therightreaction.Youcan’t;it’samazing.SometimesIthink“Oh,that’saboringinterview”andjustbecauseofthewaymydirectorshotit,andshotreaction,he’scomposedapicturethat’smadeitfarmoreinterestingthanitactuallywas.

Interviewer:

Howdoyoubringoutthebestinpeople,becauseyoualwaysseemtomanageto,notonlyrelaxthem,butsomehowgetrightintothedepthsofthem.

Parkinson:

Byresearch,byknowing,whenyougointoatelevisionstudio,moreabouttheguestinfrontyouthanthey’veforgottenaboutthemselves.And,Imeanthat’spureresearch.Imean,youprobablyuse…ina20-minuteinterview,Iprobablyusea20thoftheresearchmaterialthatI’veabsorbed,butthat’swhatyou’regonnahavetodo.ImeanIonceinterviewedRobertMitchumfor75minutesandthelongestreplyIgotfromhimwas“yes”.Andthat…that’stheonlytimeI’veusedeveryounceofresearchandeveryquestionthatI’deverthoughtof,andafewthatIhadn’tthoughtofaswell.Butthatreallyistheanswer—it’sresearch.Whenpeoplesayittoyou,youknow,“Ohyougooutandwingit,Imeanthat’snonsense.Ifanybodyevertriestotellyouthatasaninterviewerjuststarting,thatyouwingit,there’snosuchthing.It’sallpreparation;it’sknowingexactlywhatyou’regoingtodoatanygivenpointandknowingwhatyouwantfromtheperson.

Interviewer:

Anddoesthatincludestickingtowrittenquestionsordoyoudeviate?

Parkinson:

No,Imeanwhatyoudoisyouhaveanaidememoir.Ihave,my…mylistofquestionsaren’tquestionsassuch,they’reareasthatIblockout,andindeed,Ican’tremember,Ican’trecall,apartfromtheaforesaidMr.Mitchumexperience,whenI’veeverstucktothatatall.Because,quiteoftenyou’llfindthattheyspinoffintoareasthatyou’venotreallythoughtaboutandperhapsit’sworthpursuingsometimes.Thejobisverymuchlike,actually,trafficcop;you’relikeyou’reonpointdutyandyou’re…youknow,you’redirectingtheflowoftrafficwhenyou’redirectingtheflowofconversation.That’sbasicallywhatyou’redoing,whenyou’redoingatalk-show,inmyview.
