KarlDraiswasoneofthemostcreativeGermaninventorsofthe19thcentury.Hisinventionsincludetheearliesttypewriter,themeatgrinder(碾肉机),adevicetorecordpianomusiconpaper,andtwofour-wheeledhuman-poweredvehicles.Butitwastherunningmachine,themodernancestorofthebicycle,thatmadehimfamous.
Therunningmachine,alsocalledthehobbyhorse,wasineffectaveryprimitivebicycle:
ithadnochainsandwasmovedbyriderspushingoffthegroundwiththeirfeet.Thoughnotabikeinthemodernsenseoftheword,thisinventionmarkedthebigbangforthebicycle’sdevelopment.Itwasthefirstvehiclewithtwowheelsplacedinline.Draisintendedtofindamuscle-poweredreplacementforthehorses,whichwereexpensiveandconsumedlotsoffoodevenwhennotinuse.Themachine,hebelieved,wouldallowlargenumbersofpeopletomovefasterthanwalkingorridinginacoach.
DraisundertookhisfirstdocumentedrideonJune12,1817,coveringadistanceof13kilometersinonehour.Afewmonthslater,hecreatedahugesensation(轰动)whenherode60kilometersinfourhours.ThesewerelaterfollowedbyamarketingtriptoParis,wherethehobbyhorsequicklycaughton.ThecrazealsoquicklyspreadtoBritain.
