ThesetwofamousmasterpiecesGonewiththeWindandVanityFairhavedescribedseveralimagesofwomenunderthesocialbackgroundofthattime.TheAmericannovelGonewiththeWindeulogizesthetwomainfemalecharacterswhosekidneysarecompletelydifferentindiligence,pertinacityaswellaspositiveattitudetowardslifewhentheyencounterdifficulties.Especially,thepain-stakingstriveoftheindomitableandunyieldingScarlettshakesourheartsandinspiresourspirit.ComparetoScarlettandMelanie,TheactressesofEnglandmasterpieceVanityFairRebeccaandAmeliawereconsiderablyinfluentialfemalecharactersinThackeray’sage.Thethesismakesacomparisonbetweenthem:
first,theirbackground,educationandappearance;second,theirattitudestowardsociety;third,theirattitudestowardsdifficultiesinlifeandfate.Bytheseindetailcomparison,wegetbrightimagesofthesewomeninthesetwonovels.
