Introduction

1.1Thework

TheOldManandtheSea,anovellawhichisjustover100pagesinlength,waswrittenbyErnestHemingwayin1951inCubaandwaspublishedbyin1952.

TheOldManandtheSea,whichmyfriendsrecommendedtome,tookmeseveralweekstofinish.Itisaninspirationalnovella.Plainandsimple,TheOldManandtheSeawasthelastmajorworkoffictionproducedbyHemingwayinhislifetime.Additionally,itwasawardedthePulitzerPrizeforfictionin1953andplayedanimportantpartinwinningtheNobelPrizeforliteraturein1954.

1.2Theauthor

ErnestHemingwaywasbornon21stJuly1899inOakPark,Chicago.Hisfatherwasasuccessfulphysician,andhelovesfishingandhunting.Hismotherwasamusicteacher.Ernest’smothertaughtallherchildrenmusicandcreativityandtookthemtoconcerts,artgalleriesandoperas.Ernest’sfathertaughthischildrentolovenature.Tobuildfires,tocookintheopen,howtouseaxes,howtotiewetanddryflies,howtomakebullets,howtopreparebirdsandsmallanimalsformounting.

HemingwayworkedasareporterfortheKansasCityStaraftergraduatingfromhighschoolin1917.DuringWorldWar1heservedasanambulancedriverinFranceandintheItalianinfantryandwaswoundedjustbeforehis19thbirthday.After,whileworkinginParisasacorrespondentfortheTorontoStar,hebecameinvolvedwiththeexpatriateliteraryandartisticcirclesurroundingGertrudeStein.DuringtheSpanishCivilWar,Hemingwayservedasacorrespondentontheloyalistside.AfterhisexpulsionfromCubabytheCastroregime,hemovedtoIdaho.Hewasincreasinglyplaguedbyillhealthandmentalproblems,andinJuly,1961,hecommittedsuicidebyshootinghimself.

1.3Thebackground

ThestorywassetinthetwentiethcenturyafterWorldWarTwo.Itisbasedonatruththathappenedtohisfriend,afisherman,namedGregorioFuentes.In1936,Fuenteshookedabigfishduringhisfishingtriponthesea.ButthefishwassobigthatittookFuentesdaystoconquerit.Onthewaybacktohome,thefishwasattackedbysharksforseveraltimes.StrongandPerseverant,Fuentesfinallybroughtthebigfishback,thoughttherewasonlyafishskeletonleft.Hemingwaywasdeeplymovedbyhisoldfriend.Hedecidedtowriteanovel.Bytheendof1950,Hemingwaybeganhiscreation,andittookonlyeightswhenhefinishedthedraft.ItwaswellreceivedfromthestartandHemingwayconsideredithisbestworksinlife.

TheseaisasymbolofthelivingenvironmentanditbestembodiesSantiago'equalitiesofbravelyandconfidentlyfightingagainstthenatureaswellasthedestiny.Asafisherman,Santiagoreliesontheseatomakingaliving.Atthesametime,hewantstoconquerit.IntheeyesofHemingway,theseaismoreastagewherepeoplefightendlesslythanapureland.

2.1Situationofthehero

Thegistofthestoryisasfollows.

Santiago,aseniorfishermanattheageof年龄,hasnotbeenabletocatchanyfishfor84days.Therefore,heisconsidered“salao”,theworstformofunlucky.Attheverybeginning,thereisaboynamedManolin,whosupportsandtakesreallygoodcareofhimaroundhim.Actually,theboyislearninghowtofishwithhim.Moreimportantly,ManolinunderstandsSantiago.Hehasgreatfaithinhim.Unfortunately,hisparentsfinallyforcedhimtoleavetheoldmanbecauseofhisunlucky.AsforSantiago,hehasgreatfaithinhimself,too.Hedoesnotwanttoyieldtohisage,tohispoorsituation,tohisbadluck.Sohemakeshismindtogoonfishing.

2.2Thefirsttwodaysonthesea

Onthemorningofthe85th,hestartshistripagainfarintothegulfwiththebenedictionfromManolin,believingthathisunluckystreakwillsooncometoanend.

Bynoonofthefirstday,abigfishthatheissureisamarlintakeshisbait.ButitisforSantiagotopullit,insteadthefishispullinghisskiff.Santiagodoeswhathecantotrytoconquerthefish,butitalwaysendsupwithfailure.

Witheverypassingmoment,Santiagoisgettingmoreandmoretired.Inthefightagainstthemarlin,hegetsinjuredinhisrighthandandeye.What’sworse,hislefthandkeepscramping,whichaddsuptohispainandmakesitmoredifficulttodealwiththebigmarlin.Buttheideaofgivingupnevercomestohismind.Atthesametine,thebigfishmakesnosignstogiveup,too.HekeepspullingtheskiffandSantiagofarintothesea.

Theconfrontationbetweentheoldmanandthefishhasbeenatastalematefortwodaysinthisway.Neitherofthemwouldliketogivewaytoeachother.

2.3Thelastdayonthesea

Eventually,onthethirddayoftheordeal,thefishbeginstocircletheskiff,whichindicateshistirednesstoSantiago.Meanwhile,Santiagoisinasituationonbetterthanthefish.Heiscompletelyexhausted,hungryandalmostgetsintoatrance.Buthefinallyseizestheopportunityandexertseveryounceofenergytostabthefishwithhisharpoon,puttinganendtothelong,painstakingbattlebetweenhimandthefish.

However,awavesurgingafteranother----herecomethesharks.Theyareleadedherebythebloodofthemarlin.Withhisharpoon,knifeandsticks,Santiagotrieshisbesttopreventhistrophyfrombeingeaten;Heevenkillsfoursharksbyhimself.Butwhenthefifthattackcomes,therenothinghecandoaboutit,becausetherearedozensofthem.Atlast,nothingisleftforSantiagootherthanabigfishskeleton.Allhiseffortstoprotectthefishfrombeingdamagedareinvain.Hesailshisboatandgoeshome.

2.4Thefirstdaybackhome

Onthemorningofthenextday,ManolinissurprisedandhappytofindthatSantiagoisbackhomesafeandsound.WhileSantiagoissleeping,somanypeoplegatheraroundthebigskeleton,Sayinghowbigisit.TheyaredeeplymovedbySantiago’sbraveryandstrongwill.

ManolincontinuestoattendtoSantiagoandhemakeshismindthathewillcomebacktotheoldmanandgoonlearningfishingfromhim.

Inconclusion,TheOldManandtheSeatellsusastoryinwhichanoldmanfightbravelyagainsthismisfortuneinhislife.Hemingwayusehisconciselanguageoutlinesforusaclassicalmanofironimage.
