Conclusion.Bibliography.Introduction1.1 The workThe Old Man and the Sea, a novella which is just over 100 pages in length, was written by Ernest Hemingway in 1951 in Cuba and was published by in 1952.The Old Man and the Sea, which my friends recommended to me, took me several weeks

6、 to finish. It is an inspirational novella. Plain and simple, The Old Man and the Sea was the last major work of fiction produced by Hemingway in his lifetime. Additionally, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953 and played an important part in winning the Nobel Prize for literature i

7、n 1954.1.2 The authorErnest Hemingway was born on 21st July 1899 in Oak Park, Chicago. His father was a successful physician, and he loves fishing and hunting. His mother was a music teacher. Ernests mother taught all her children music and creativity and took them to concerts, art galleries and ope

8、ras. Ernests father taught his children to love nature. To build fires, to cook in the open, how to use axes, how to tie wet and dry flies, how to make bullets, how to prepare birds and small animals for mounting. Hemingway worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star after graduating from high sch

9、ool in 1917. During World War 1 he served as an ambulance driver in France and in the Italian infantry and was wounded just before his 19th birthday.After, while working in Paris as a correspondent for the Toronto Star, he became involved with the expatriate literary and artistic circle surrounding

10、Gertrude Stein. During the Spanish Civil War, Hemingway served as a correspondent on the loyalist side. After his expulsion from Cuba by the Castro regime, he moved to Idaho. He was increasingly plagued by ill health and mental problems, and in July, 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself. D

11、uring his lifetime, he was awarded with: Silver Medal of Military Valor in World War Two Pulitzer Prize in 1953 (for The Old Man and the Sea)Nobel Prize in literature in 1954 (also party for The Old Man and the Sea )In 2001, two of his books, The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms, would be named

13、wo. It is based on a truth that happened to his friend, a fisherman, named Gregorio Fuentes. In 1936, Fuentes hooked a big fish during his fishing trip on the sea. But the fish was so big that it took Fuentes days to conquer it. On the way back to home, the fish was attacked by sharks for several ti

14、mes. Strong and Perseverant, Fuentes finally brought the big fish back, thought there was only a fish skeleton left. Hemingway was deeply moved by his old friend. He decided to write a novel. By the end of 1950, Hemingway began his creation, and it took only eights when he finished the draft. It was

15、 well received from the start and Hemingway considered it his best works in life.1.4 Style of the Novel1.4.1 The embodiment of iceberg principle Symbolism which makes the novel more profound is an important method preferred by many writers. In The Old Man and the Sea, the sea, the boy, the shark and

16、 the lion have their symbolic meanings. The sea is a symbol of the living environment and it best embodies Santiago equalities of bravely and confidently fighting against the nature as well as the destiny. As a fisherman, Santiago relies on the sea to making a living. At the same time, he wants to c

17、onquer it. In the eyes of Hemingway, the sea is more a stage where people fight endlessly than a pure land.The main point2.1 Situation of the heroThe gist of the story is as follows. Santiago ,a senior fisherman at the age of年龄,has not been able to catch any fish for 84 days. Therefore, he is consid

18、ered “salao” , the worst form of unlucky. At the very beginning, there is a boy named Manolin, who supports and takes really good care of him around him. Actually, the boy is learning how to fish with him. More importantly, Manolin understands Santiago. He has great faith in him. Unfortunately, his

19、parents finally forced him to leave the old man because of his unlucky. As for Santiago, he has great faith in himself, too. He does not want to yield to his age, to his poor situation, to his bad luck. So he makes his mind to go on fishing.2.2 The first two days on the seaOn the morning of the 85th

20、, he starts his trip again far into the gulf with the benediction from Manolin, believing that his unlucky streak will soon come to an end.By noon of the first day, a big fish that he is sure is a marlin takes his bait. But it is for Santiago to pull it, instead the fish is pulling his skiff. Santia

21、go does what he can to try to conquer the fish, but it always ends up with failure.With every passing moment, Santiago is getting more and more tired. In the fight against the marlin, he gets injured in his right hand and eye. Whats worse, his left hand keeps cramping, which adds up to his pain and

22、makes it more difficult to deal with the big marlin. But the idea of giving up never comes to his mind. At the same tine, the big fish makes no signs to give up, too. He keeps pulling the skiff and Santiago far into the sea.The confrontation between the old man and the fish has been at a stalemate f

23、or two days in this way. Neither of them would like to give way to each other. 2.3 The last day on the seaEventually, on the third day of the ordeal, the fish begins to circle the skiff, which indicates his tiredness to Santiago. Meanwhile, Santiago is in a situation on better than the fish. He is c

24、ompletely exhausted, hungry and almost gets into a trance. But he finally seizes the opportunity and exerts every ounce of energy to stab the fish with his harpoon, putting an end to the long, painstaking battle between him and the fish. However, a wave surging after another- here come the sharks. T

25、hey are leaded here by the blood of the marlin. With his harpoon, knife and sticks, Santiago tries his best to prevent his trophy from being eaten; He even kills four sharks by himself. But when the fifth attack comes, there nothing he can do about it, because there are dozens of them. At last, noth

26、ing is left for Santiago other than a big fish skeleton. All his efforts to protect the fish from being damaged are in vain. He sails his boat and goes home.2.4 The first day back homeOn the morning of the next day, Manolin is surprised and happy to find that Santiago is back home safe and sound. Wh

27、ile Santiago is sleeping, so many people gather around the big skeleton, Saying how big is it. They are deeply moved by Santiagos bravery and strong will.Manolin continues to attend to Santiago and he makes his mind that he will come back to the old man and go on learning fishing from him.In conclus

29、this novella. The first one is the embodiment of the “iceberg theory”. Terse words, vivid images, copious emotions and profound thoughts are the four ingredients of Hemingways iceberg theory.
