Pangolins aretheonlymammalsthatareentirelycoveredintoughscales(鳞),whichmakesthemlookverystrong.Butactuallytheyareendangered mammals.Thereareeightdifferentspeciesofpangolins,fourinAsiaandfourinAfrica,andallarethreatenedwithextinction.Althoughpangolinsareprotectedthroughoutmostofthecountrieswhere theylive,highdemandinEastAsia,wherethedeliciouspangolinmeatisconsideredadelicacyandwheretheirscalesareusedintraditionalmedicines,isdrivinganillegaltradeinbothliveanimalsandpangolinparts.Thenumberofpangolintraffickingisshocking.Expertsbelievethatoverthelast10yearsmorethan1millionpangolinsweretakenfromthewild.Itisestimatedthatbetween40,000and81,250pangolinswerekilledfortheillegaltradein2013alone.

InFebruary,the UnitedStatesreleasedaplantodealwithwildlifetrafficking,whichlaysoutthestepswewilltaketofighttheillegaltradeinwildlife,includingpangolins.Weare strengtheningthecarryingoutoftheplan;buildinginternationalcooperationandcontributiontoprotectwildlife; raisingawarenesstodrivedownthedemandthatisfuellingtheillegaltrade.
