摘要:
英语阅读在英语学习中一直起着至关重要的作用,但对于非英语专业本科生,由于平时对英语的重视程度不够,所以英语阅读方面仍存在很多问题阻碍英语水平的提高。
为了帮助非英语专业的同学更好的提升英语阅读水平,本文通过调查问卷的形式对山东农业大学不同的非英语专业本科生进行了调查,在此基础上对他们在英语阅读中面临的困难及成因进行分析,并针对这些问题就如何提高非英语专业本科生英语阅读能力提出了相应的解决策略。

1.ABriefIntroductionoftheImportanceofEnglishReading
Inthecontemporarysociety,English,asaninternationallanguage,becomesmoreandmoreimportantintoday'
sincreasinglyhighdegreeofinternationalizationandextensivedegreeoftheexchangesbetweenChinaandtherestoftheworld.Butasthelearningofalanguage,thestudents'
readingabilitylargelyreflectsthelevelofthecomprehensiveabilityofEnglishandtheabilitytoadapttothedemandsoftheerainthefuture.
EnglishreadingisoneofthemostbasicandimportantEnglishabilities.Readingistheimportantwayofacquiringknowledge,understandingtheworld,anddevelopingintelligenceandemotions.Developingreadingabilitycanhelpexpandyourvocabulary,enrichyourlanguageknowledgeandimproveyourlanguageskills.Englishreadingskillisnotonlyoneoftheimportantlanguageskillsbutalsooneofthelearningskillsstudents’mustmaster.Englishreadingabilityisthebasisandprerequisiteofdevelopingotherlanguageskillsandisalsooneoftheimportantsymbolstomeasureone’sEnglishlevels.Itisanimportantgoaloflearningaforeignlanguage.BymasteringtheEnglishreadingability,studentscanunderstandtheeducation,science,polityofthelatestdevelopmentwithinthescopeoftheworldandcanalsolaythesolidfoundationforbetterintegratingintotheinternationalcommunity.
2.TheConditionoftheStudiesonEnglishReading
ThestudyonEnglishreadingstrategiesshouldbebasedontheresearchoflearningstrategies.Sincethe1970s,manyforeignresearchershavepaidattentionontheimportancerolethelearningstrategyplaysinlanguagelearning,suchasRubin(1975),Naiman(1978),Stern(1975),etc.Sincethe1980s,ChinesescholarsalsobegantopaycloseattentiononthelearningofEnglishlearningstrategies,suchasWenQiufang(1984),LvZhongshe(1998),LiuJinkai(2002),etc.TherearealsosomeresearchesaimingatEnglishreadingstrategies,butthenumberoftheresearchesofreadingstrategiesfornon-Englishmajorsisverysmall.
Inviewofthiscondition,thepapermakesaninvestigationintotheEnglishreadingconditionofthenon-EnglishmajorsinShandongagriculturaluniversitybymeansofaself-designedquestionnaire.
3.InvestigationMethod
3.1InvestigativeQuestions
Thisinvestigationiscarriedoutbyaskingthenon-Englishmajorstudentstoanswerthequestionnaire.Thequestionnaireaimsatthefollowingproblems:
(1)ThetimeusedinEnglishreadingandthereadingmaterials;
(2)Thepurposeofreading;
(3)Englishreadingdifficultiesandreasons.
3.2InvestigativeObjects
Theobjectsoftheinvestigationarethe60seniorsofnon-EnglishmajorsinShandongagriculturaluniversity.Andtheiragesrangfrom19to22,withanaverageageof20.67,amongwhichthenumberofthegirlsis30andtheboys30.
3.3InvestigativeInstrument
Thisinvestigationiscarriedoutbyaskingthenon-Englishmajorstudentstoanswerthequestionnaire.Inordertoavoidunnecessarymisunderstandings,thequestionnaireiswritteninChinese.Thisquestionnaireincludestwoparts:
thefirstpartisaboutthebasicsituations,includingtheage,sex,majorandEnglishlevel.ThesecondpartismainlyabouttheEnglishreadingpurposes,time,materialsanddifficultiesandsoon.
Thequestionnaireaimstoinvestigateintothenon-EnglishmajorsofdifferentEnglishlevels,andthenastatisticalanalysiswasmadeaccordingtotheresults,thuswewillfindtheirproblemsinEnglishreadingandputforwardthecorrespondingstrategies.
4.InvestigationResultsandtheAnalysis
Theinvestigationresultsshowthat:
onthewhole,theinvestigativeobjectsspendlittletimeonEnglishreadingandreadreferencematerials,newspapersandmagazinesmostly.ThemainreadingpurposeformoststudentsistoimprovetheirEnglishlevel.Theinvestigativeobjects’biggestdifficultyinEnglishreadingistoolittletimetheyspendonEnglishreading,andasaresultofthis,theirinterestsinEnglishdeclineandtheEnglishlevellowers.
4.1ReadingTime
ThetimetheinvestigativeobjectsspendonEnglishstudyandreadingallisverylittle.Thetextbooklearningandafter-classreadingtimeisonly2.7hand2.1honaveragerespectively,sotheEnglishlearningtimeonaverageisonly4.8hweekly.ManystudentssaythatnotunderstandingthemeaningandthepressurecomingfromthelearningofspecializedcoursesleadtotheirunwillingtoinvestenoughtimeandenergyinEnglishlearning.
Theinvestigativeobjects’timespentonafter-classreadingissignificantlylessthanontextbooklearning.Themajorityofstudentsthinktextbooklearningismoreimportantthanafter-classreadingbecausemostoftheexamcontentcomfromthetextbook.Solearningthetextbookwellcanbebeneficialtoimproveone’stestscores.Ontheotherhand,theteacherdonotputforwardanyrequirementsforafter-classreading,noranyformsofinspection.Sothebenefitsofafter-classEnglishreadingcannotbeseenapparently.
4.2ReadingMaterials
Referencematerials:
nearlyhalfofthestudentschoosetoreadreferencematerials.MoststudentsthinktheycanimprovetheirEnglishtestscoresbydoingallkindsofEnglishreferencematerials,especiallyforthenation-widetest,suchastheCET-4andCET-6.

about42.7%oftheinvestigativeobjectsreadEnglishmagazinesornewspapersintheirleisuretime,mainlyincluding"

.Theychoosethesenewspapersandmagazinesmainlybecauseoftheirstrongtopicality,richincontentandtheconvenienceforbuyingorborrowing.Atthesametime,thelanguageinthesedomesticnewspapersandmagazinesisusuallysimpleandthecontentisfamiliarandeasytoread,soitisnaturalforthemtobecomestudents’preferredafter-classreadings.

4.3ReadingPurposes
Thenon-EnglishmajorshaveclearpurposewhiledoingEnglishreading.Almostnoonechoicetoreadwithoutadefinitepurposeandnearlyhalfofthestudents’primaryreadingpurposeistoimprovehisEnglishlevel.Buttherearealso42.7%students’readingpurposeistheneedofemploymentandonly9.5percentofstudentshopethatbyEnglishreadingtheycanenrichtheirlifeandachievethepurposeofentertainment.
Theresultsindicatethatthestudents'
foreignlanguagereadingismainlytopasstheexam,obtaininformationorothertoolshavingtodowithone’sfuture,ratherthanappreciatetheculture.Studentsgetlittlepleasureinreading,sotheycertainlywillreadaslittleaspossible.Readlessmakesitmoredifficulttounderstandandthereadingspeedcouldn'
tbeimproved.Asaresultofthis,thestudents’interestinreadingbecomeslessandless.
AllrespondentsthinkEnglishreadingcanhelptoimprovetheEnglishlevel.About13.16%studentsthinkithasagreathelp,34.21%thinkthebenefitisbigger,47.37%thinkitisgeneral,andtherestthinkreadinghelpslittle.Apparently,almostallstudentshaverealizetheimportanceofEnglishreading,butthedegreeofthehelpisnotdisagreed.
4.4ReadingDifficulties
15.9%studentsthinktheycan’tfindtherightEnglishreadingmaterials.Andmoststudentshopetheycanreadthebest-sellingpopnovelsinrecentyears,preferablythethrillingshortstories.Therearestillalotofstudentsbeinginterestedinnewspapersandmagazineswhicharetopicalandinteresting.Butthekindsofourcountry'
sexistingnewspapersormagazinesareverylittle,sotherangewecanchooseissmall.WhilemostEnglishnewspapersandmagazinesfocusonEnglish"

Thereare35.9%studentsthinkmostreadingmaterialsaretoodifficulttounderstand.Butatpresentthepublishersinourcountryseemtobekeenontheexam-orientedteachingmaterialsandbooks.SothereallysuitableEnglishreadingmaterialsforstudentsareverylittle.Andmostreadingmaterialssuitable
