It’sbeenalongandalmost3yearwaitforthecomingofStephenChow’s

newmovieCJ7,ontheheelsofhisinternationalsuccesswithShaolinSoccerand

KungFuHustle,bothofwhichwereadapted/parodied/copiedintheothertwo

competitivemoviesthisholidayseasoninKungFuDunkandAhLongPteLtd.If

imitationisthebestformofflattery,thatgoestoshowwho’sthebossandwho

callstheshotsintheinnovationandcreativitydepartments,thatthere’sonly

oneforcetobereckonedwithindraftingcomedythatappealstotheworld.You

mightthinkthatI’msingingpraisesofChowandhisworks,butyes,that’sthe

skyrockethighexpectationsthathehadbuiltforhimselfovertheyearswith

hisrapidfiremo-lei-tau（nonsensical）comedicmoviesentertainingthemasses

preandpost1997HongKong,andnowhecanaffordtotakehistimeinreleasing

hismoviesoncetheypassthroughhisperfectionistqualitycontrol.Sitting

throughCJ7,Ihadinitiallythoughtthatitwasamongsthisweakerworks,but

thencamethefinalact,whichwhileitwasemotionallymanipulative,Icannot

denythatIbothlaughedandcriedatthesametime,whichisextremelyrare,

andonlypulledoffbyChow’sknackofstructuringhisscenes.

Chowhasshownhispedigreeinbecomingagoodstoryteller.Ifheisnot

alreadybeingconsideredone,thenCJ7isasignofbetterthingstocome,as

slowly,itcanbeseenthathe’sgivinguphispresenceonscreen,andturning

hisattentiontobehindthecamerainstead.EvenwithmovieslikeShaolinSoccer

andKungFuHustle,whilehewastheleadactor,hestillmaderoomforhis

supportingcaststoshinethrough.

Thistimethough,hehadtotallytakenthebackseatandgavethespotlight

tothechildactressXuJiaowhoplaysDicky,theson（yesyoureadthatright）

ofChow’sconstructionworkercharacterTi.Beingpoor,Tiworksextremelyhard

tosendhissontoapremierschooltoreceiveagoodeducation,inthehopes

thathewillbeabletobreakoutofthepovertycircleintimetocome.Butin

beinginaneliteschool,Dickybecomesautomaticfodderforrichschool

bullies,wholookdownonhimbecauseofhissocialstatus.Muchofthemovie

dwellsonthisschoolyardpoliticking,andwithTitryinghardtoimpartgood

principlestohissonthatitbecomessomewhatrepetitive.

Intryingtopacifyhissonwhoyearnsforthelatesttoyintown,a

high-techroboticdogcalledCJ1,Tigoesbacktohisfavouritehaunt,the

junkyard,andpicksupagreenballoutfittedwithanantenna,asareplacement

toy.Withouthisknowingofcourse,thisballturnsouttobeanalienlifeform,

andDickysoonuncoversthatithasmagicalabilities.ChristenedCJ7,muchof

thelaughscomefromCJ7andDicky,intheformofspoofsrangingfromMission:

Impossible2toAsianfarelikeCrouchingTiger,HiddenDragon,andalsotakesa

spinfromChow’sprevious2movies.

Butdon’texpectthejokestobeofthemo-lei-tautype,astherearen’t

thatmanyjokestobeginwith.Gonearethedaysoflaugh-a-minutetypecomedy

fromStephenChow.Whiletoilethumourisstillquitestaple,Chowseemedto

haveembracedspecialeffectsevenmorethistime,startingwithatotally

animatedCJ7,whichhas“cute”plasteredalloverit,makingitadelight

amongsttheyoungandthefemaleaudience.Itellyou,ifit’snotalready

available,someoneshouldmaketheplushtoyrightnowandmilkitforallit’s

worth.Mostofthejokesandfunsequencesweresprucedupbyspecialeffects,

buttherewereamomentortwowhichIfeltwasquiteunnecessary.

Inmostways,CJ7isn’treallyyourtypicaloutrightcomedy.Bytheendof

it,Ithoughtitsdramaticmomentsweretuggingattheheartstrings,asI

mentionedearlier,andindeedthissomehowrepresentsashiftbyChowtoa

somewhatdifferentterritory,buildinguphismoviewithcomedybeingperipheral

orsecondarytothemainplot.Therearemomentsoffunbalancedbymoments

whicharetouching,episodesoftheridiculousbalancedbyepisodeswhichmade

youreflect.Andanymorewhichfeaturesgreatsongs,getmyvoteofapproval

too,withBoneyM’sSonnygettingplentyofairplay,andILoveChopincomingon

atjusttheveryappropriatemoment.

However,whatisstillsuspectthough,isChow’sabilitytoweavemore

fleshintowhatareessentiallyflowervaserolesinthefemalecharacterswho

playoppositehimasloveinterests.WithShaolinSoccer,VickyZhaowas

unfortunatelyquitepedestrian,andwithKungFuHustle,thescopegivento

HuangShengyiwasworse.KittyZhangcontinuesthetrendasgoodlookingteacher

MrsYuen,whotakespityonDicky,butnothingmore.HavingseenalltheLunar

NewYearmoviepremieresforthisweek,IcansafelysayCJ7cameouttops,

becauseithadalotmoremomentsinthemoviethatmakesitfamilyfriendly

entertainment,andyetimpartingandgivingoutremindersofgoodvaluesthat

willalmostcertainlyruboffontheyoung,andtheyoungatheart.Notathis

best,butChowdeliversyetanothercrowdpleaser,forsure.Recommended!

richbutarrogantman,onthepartyforthefirsttime,sheisdissatisfiedwith

theproudmannerofDarcy.Darcylooksdownonthosewhoareinalowersocial

includingElizabeth.However,aftergettingtoknowthecourage,

independenceandconfidenceofElizabeth,healmostfallsinlovewithher.But

ElizabethbelievestheliesofWickhamwhichcauseshergreatprejudiceto
