Description

Thiscoursefocusesonthestrategicchallengesconfrontingfirmsthatcompeteintheglobaleconomy.Afirm’sstrategyisits“theory”ofhowtogaincompetitiveadvantageandcompetesuccessfullyinthemarketplace.Strategicmanagementistheprocessthatmanagers,especiallyexecutives,developandimplementafirm’sstrategy.Ourobjectiveistohaveanenhancedunderstandingofthemostfundamentalquestioninstrategicmanagement:

Mosttextbookspresentknowledge“asis”andignorethefactthatthefieldhasnumerousinconclusivebutimportantdebates.EverychapteroftheGlobalStrategytext—nowaglobalmarketleader—hasasectionon“DebatesandExtensions,”someofwhichhavesignificantethicaldimensions（seealsothecriticaldiscussionquestionsonethicsineverychapter）.Pickanyonedebate/ethicaldilemmatowriteoneortwoone-pagepapers（single-spaced,nocoverpageplease）.

Youneedtobothsummarizethedebate/ethicaldilemma（lessthan½

page）,andanswerthequestion:

TeamPresentationonaDebate

basedonaCase

Iexpectstudentstoformgroupsof2-3students（maximum4students）.Asagroup,youwillpresentadebatebasedonacase.Itwillnormallybepresentedafterthelectureisoverbutbeforetheclassdiscussionbegins.Youwillhave15minutesand6slides.Slide1isthemandatorytitleslide,withallnamesandemails.Soyoureallyonlyhave5slides.UseSlides2and3tosummarizethecase,anduseSlides4and5toillustratehowthecaseillustratesadebate.Itisnotmandatorythatallmembersofthegrouppresentthecase.

Pleasenotethatthekeyisnottobecomprehensive.Thecasediscussion,afteryourpresentationinvolvingtheentireclass,willbecomprehensive.

DonotattempttosummarizetheentirecaseinSlides2and3.Onlysummarizetherelevantinformation.Pleasemakeyourslidesreadable—youwilllosepointsifclassmatessittinginthebackrowcannotreadtheslidesyoupresent.Althoughcasediscussionquestionsarehelpful,donotattempttoanswerthemall.Thekeyhereistofocusononedebate（assuggested）.

Youchoosethemosteffectiveformattopresentthedebate.Onepossibilityistohaveteammember1presentsideA,teammember2presentsideB,andthenteammember3playtheroleofmoderator/reconciler.Alternatively,theentireteamcanrepresentsideA,andengagetherestoftheclassassideB.

Thefirstpartwillbeacasestudyfocusingonahard-to-tacklestrategicproblem.Examplesinclude:

（3）Howtogovernanewlyacquiredforeigncompany?

（4）Howtodealwithsomeethicaldilemmas?

Trytofollowtheformatofthecasesthatwestudyduringtheterm,giveenoughdetailsonthebackgroundofthefirm,andfocusonadifficultdecision.Thispartshouldtakeapproximately6-8pages.Thesecondpartwillbeyouranalysisandrecommendationstothesemanagersintermsofhowtoproceed,whichshouldtakeabout2-4pages（similartoyourcaseanalysismentionedearlier）—atleast1pageshouldbedevotedtorecommendations.Alltogether,theideallengthis10pages,excludingattachmentssuchasfiguresandtables.Intermsoftheattachments,pleasebereasonable.Undernocircumstancescanthetotalreport（allinclusive）exceed20pages—Iwillstopreadingafterp.20.

Thebestpaperswillshowevidenceofsomeinvestigativeefforts—diggingformoreinformation,interviews/phonecalls/emailswithmanagers—andofsynthesisandcarefulediting.Theywillalsobeinsightful,goingbeyondthemostobviouslessonstodrawoutthestorybehindthestory.

Thequalitywillbeevaluatedalongcontentandprocessdimensions（60%and40%,respectively）.Carefuleditingisexpected.Simply“cutandpaste”sectionswrittenbydifferentcoauthorswillresultinaverypoorgrade.Appendix1givesacompletelistofthegradingcriteria—payattention!

Normally,everybodyinthegroupgetsthesamegrade.However,ifthereisanysignificantfreerider,pleasefileacomplaintagainstthisindividual—theformispostedonWebCT.Yourcomplaintwillbestrongerifthereareothermembersinyourgroupwhoalsofiletheircomplaints.Iwillinvestigateand
