Theirreasoningwaspractical.ForthephilosopherDavidHume,humanitywastherightsubjectforphilosophybecausewecanexaminehumanbehaviorandsofindrealevidenceofhowpeoplethinkandfeel.Andfromthatwecanmakejudgmentsaboutthesocietiesweliveinandmakeconcretesuggestionsabouthowtheycanbeimproved,foruniversalbenefit.

Hume’senquiryintothenatureofknowledgelaidthefoundationsforthescientificmethod-thepursuitoftruththroughexperiment.HisfriendandfellowresidentofEdinburgh,AdamSmith,famouslyappliedthestudyofmankindtothewaysinwhichmankinddoesbusiness.Trade,heargued,wasaformofinfrmation.Inpursuingourownintereststhroughtradinginmarkets,weallcometobenefiteachother.
