swasaclunkyandteletypemachinethatbarelydoanythingcomparedtothecomputerwehavetoday.Butitchangedmylife.
WhenmyfriendPaulAllenandIstaredMicrosoft30yearsago,wehadavisionof"
acomputeroneverydeskandineveryhome,"
whichprobablysoundedalittletoooptimisticatatimewhenmostcomputerswerethesizeofrefrigerators.Butwebelievethatpersonalcomputerwouldchangetheworld.Andtheyhave.
Andafter30years,IstillinspiredbycomputersasIwasbackinseventhgrade.

Butforallthecoolthingsthatapersoncandowithapc,therearelotsotherwayswecanputourcreativityandintelligencetoworktoimproveourworld.Therearestillfartoomanypeopleintheworldwhosemostbasicneedsgounmet.Everyyear,forexample,millionsofpeoplediefromdiseasesthatareeasytopreventortreatinthedevelopedworld.

Thosethreehallowedwordsreverentlydictatewhatyououghttobe,whatyoucanbe,whatyouwillbe.Theyareyourrallyingpoints:
tobuildcouragewhencourageseemstofail;
toregainfaithwhenthereseemstobelittlecauseforfaith;
tocreatehopewhenhopebecomesforlorn.
Unhappily,Ipossessneitherthateloquenceofdiction,thatpoetryofimagination,northatbrillianceofmetaphortotellyouallthattheymean.Theunbelieverswillsaytheyarebutwords,butaslogan,butaflamboyantphrase.Everypedant,everydemagogue,everycynic,everyhypocrite,everytroublemaker,andIamsorrytosay,someothersofanentirelydifferentcharacter,willtrytodowngradethemeventotheextentofmockeryandridicule.
Butthesearesomeofthethingstheydo.Theybuildyourbasiccharacter.Theymoldyouforyourfuturerolesasthecustodiansofthenation'
sdefense.Theymakeyoustrongenoughtoknowwhenyouareweak,andbraveenoughtofaceyourselfwhenyouareafraid.Theyteachyoutobeproudandunbendinginhonestfailure,buthumbleandgentleinsuccess;
nottosubstitutewordsforactions,nottoseekthepathofcomfort,buttofacethestressandspurofdifficultyandchallenge;
tolearntostandupinthestormbuttohavecompassiononthosewhofall;
tomasteryourselfbeforeyouseektomasterothers;
tohaveaheartthatisclean,agoalthatishigh;
tolearntolaugh,yetneverforgethowtoweep;
