8.2.1

Fullychargedcellsarestoredinanambienttemperatureof25°

C.Eachcellisthenshortcircuitedbyconnectingthepositiveandnegativeterminalswithatotalexternalresistanceof30+/-10mΩ.

Thecellsaretoremainontestfor6horuntilthecasetemperaturedeclinesby20%ofthemaximumtemperaturerise,whicheveristhesooner

8.2.2

Thetestsampleistobeplacedonaflatsurface.A15,8mmdiameterbaristobeplacedacrossthe 

centreofthesample.A9,1kgmassistobedroppedfromaheightof61±

2,5cmontothebar 

placedonthesample.

Acylindricalorprismaticcellistobeimpactedwithitslongitudinalaxisparalleltotheflatsurfaceandperpendiculartothelongitudinalaxisofthe15,8mmdiametercurvedsurfacelyingacrossthe 

 

centreofthetestsample.Aprismaticcellisalsotoberotated90degreesarounditslongitudinalaxissothatboththewideandnarrowsideswillbesubjectedtotheimpact.Eachsampleistobesubjectedtoonlyasingleimpactwithseparatesamplestobeusedforeachimpact.(seefigure2)

8.2.3

Thedroptestisconductedonacellorcellblock,andbatterysystem*.Thetestmethodandtheheightofthedroparedeterminedbythetestunitweightasshowninthetable2.

8.2.3.1

Eachfullychargedtestunitisdroppedthreetimesfromaheightshownintable2ontoaconcretefloor.

Inthecaseofthemassoftestunitislessthan7kg,thetestunitsaredroppedsoastoobtainimpactsinrandomorientations.Inthecaseofthemassoftestunitis7kgormoreandlessthan20kg,thetestshallbeperformedwiththetestunitdroppedinthebottomdowndirection.Thebottomsurfaceofthetestunitisspecifiedbythemanufacturer.

Afterthetest,thetestunitsshallbeputonrestforaminimumofonehourandthen434avisualinspectionshallbeperformed.

Edgeandcornerdroptest(cellorcellblock,andbatterysystem)

8.2.3.2

Each 

fullychargedtestunitisdroppedtwotimesfromaheightshownintable2ontoaconcretefloor. 

Thedroptestconditionsshallassure,withtestarrangementsasshowninFigure3,Figure4andFigure 

5,reproducibleimpactpointsfortheshortestedgedropimpactandthecornerimpacted.Thetwoimpacts,perimpacttype,shallbeonthesamecornerandonthesameshortestedge.Forthe 

cornerandedgedrops,thetestunitshallbeorientedinsuchawaythatastraightlinedrawnthroughthestruckcorner/edgeandthetestunitgeometriccentreisapproximatelyperpendiculartotheimpactsurface.

8.2.4

Eachfullychargedcell,stabilizedatroomtemperature,isplacedinagravityorcirculatingairconvectionoven.

Theoventemperatureisraisedatarateof5°

C/min±

C/mintoatemperatureof85°

C.Thecellremainsatthistemperaturefor3hbeforethetestisdiscontinued.

Thetestshallbecarriedoutatanambienttemperatureof25°

C.Eachtestcellshallbedischargedataconstantcurrentof0,2

Atoafinaldischargevoltagespecifiedbythemanufacturer.Samplecellsshallthenbechargedwithaconstantcurrentequaltothemaximumspecifiedchargecurrentofthebatterysystemuntilthevoltagereachesthemaximumvoltagevaluethatispossiblewhenanysinglefailureonthechargecontrolorchargeprotectionfunctionoccurs.Then,thechargeisterminated.Thevoltageandtemperatureshouldbemonitoredduringthetest.

Thetestshallbecontinueduntilthetemperatureofthecellsurfacereachessteadystateconditions(lessthan10°

Cchangeina30-minuteperiod)orreturnstoambient.

8.2.6

Adischargedcellissubjectedtoaforceddischargeat1,0 

Aforatestperiodof90min.Afterthetestperiod,avisualinspectionshallbeperformed.

Ifthedischargevoltagereachesthetargetvoltageshownbelowwithinthetestperiod,thevoltageshallbekeptatthetargetvoltagebyreducingthecurrentfortheremainingtestperiod.Thetargetvoltageisdeterminedasfollows:

i.Batterysystemprovidedwithredundantindependentprotectionfordischargevoltagecontrolorthebatterysystemhasonlysinglecellorcellblock:

Thebatterysystemisfullychargedandthenleftuntilthecellsstabilizeat25°

C.Onecellinthebatterysystemisheateduntilthecellentersthermalrunaway,forexample,usingresistiveheatingorthroughthermalconductiveheattransferusinganexternalheatsource.Themethodusedtocreateathermalrunawayinonecellistobedescribedanddocumentedinthetestreport.Afterthermalrunawayinthecellisinitiated,theheateristurnedoffandbatterysystemisobservedfor1hour.

Othermethodsthantheexamplesnotedabovetoinitiatethermalrunawayinonecellareallowed.SeenormativeAnnex-1formoredetails.

9.2.2

Thetestshallbecarriedoutinanambienttemperatureof25°

Candundernormaloperatingconditionswiththecoolingsystem(ifany)operating(maincontactorsareclosedwiththebatterysystemcontrolledbytheBMU).Eachtestbatterysystemshallbedischargedataconstantcurrentof0,2 

A,toafinaldischargevoltagespecifiedbythemanufacturer.Samplebatteriesshallthenbechargedatthemaximumcurrentoftherecommendedchargerwithsetvoltageexceedingtheupperlimitchargevoltageby10%foreachcellinthebattery.

Theexceededvoltagecanbeappliedbyanadditionalchargerifitisdifficulttodoitbytheoriginalcharger.Alsotheexceededvoltagecanbeappliedtoapartofthecell(s)inthebatterysystemifitisdifficulttodoitinusingthewholebatterysystem.

ThetestshallbecarriedoutuntiltheBMUterminatesthecharge,whichshouldoccurbeforereaching110%oftheupperlimitchargevoltage.Dataacquisition/monitoringshallbecontinuedforonehourafterchargeisstopped.Allfunctionsofthebatterysystemshallbefullyoperationalasdesignedduringthetest.
