Inasetofexperiments,thescientiststestedtheprogramusingmanyexamplesof1,623handwrittencharactersfrom50differentwritingsystemsfromaroundtheworld.Inaone-shotclassificationchallenge,peoplewerequitegoodatit,withanaverageerrorrateof4.5percent.ButBPL,slightlyedgedthemout,withacomparableerrorrateof3.3percent.Thescientistsalsochallengedtheprogramandsomehumanparticipantstodrawnewversionsofvariouscharacterstheypresented.Theythenhadhumanjudgesdeterminewhichonesweremadebymanandwhichweremadebymachine.Asitturnedout,thehumanswerebarelyasgoodaschanceatfiguringoutwhichsetofcharacterswasmachine-producedandwhichwascreatedbyhumans.
