Thisisthefirstteachingperiodofthisunit,whichintroducesstudentstosomebasicinformationaboutCanada,itsgeography,itscultureanditspopulation.Atthebeginningoftheclass,theteachercanleadinthetopicoftheunitbyshowingstudentsamapofCanadaorotherpicturesofCanadaandletthestudentsdescribethemortalkaboutCanada.

WarmingUpisintendedtofindouthowmuchgeneralknowledgestudentsalreadyhaveaboutCanada.ItwillalsogiveachancetothosewhohavevisitedorreadaboutCanadatosharetheirknowledgewiththerestoftheclass.Soallowstudentssometimetogiveshorttalks,showphotographs,etc.andmotivateotherstobecomeinterestedinCanadatoo.

Pre-readingcontainsthreequestionswhichencouragestudentstoreflectontheirpersonalexperiencesandinformationandtheirownideas.Thisdiscussionleadstothereadingpassageinwhichtheymayfindsomefactstheyrecognizeaswellasnewinformation.Studentscanbeencouragedtodiscussthesequestions.Thentheyareaskedtolookatthetitleofthereadingpassageandthepicturestopredictwhatthepassageisabout.ThispartisveryusefulforthenextpartReading.
