TheimageofVanGoghasa“madgenius”arguablycomesfromhisownart．InhisSelf-PortraitWithaBandagedEar（1889），hefocusesonthewoundhegavehimselfwhenhecutoffhisleftearwitharazorblade（剃须刀片）inDecember1888．AccordingtoJonathanJones，theUKnewspaperTheGuardian’sartwriter，thisisaportraitofanartistbothhurtand“liberatedbymadness”．
Similarly，thefindingbyAmericanbiographersStevenNaifehandGregoryWhiteSmiththatVanGoghwasshotbysomeoneelseischallengedintheexhibition．Themuseumdisplaysthegunheprobablyusedinhissuicide（自杀）.Otherevidenceintheexhibition，includinghislastworksofartthatgiveawayhisdarkthoughts，backsupthebeliefthatVanGoghdiedbysuicide．
