TheimageofVanGoghasa“madgenius”arguablycomesfromhisownart.InhisSelf-PortraitWithaBandagedEar(1889),hefocusesonthewoundhegavehimselfwhenhecutoffhisleftearwitharazorblade(剃须刀片)inDecember1888.AccordingtoJonathanJones,theUKnewspaperTheGuardian’sartwriter,thisisaportraitofanartistbothhurtand“liberatedbymadness”.

Similarly,thefindingbyAmericanbiographersStevenNaifehandGregoryWhiteSmiththatVanGoghwasshotbysomeoneelseischallengedintheexhibition.Themuseumdisplaysthegunheprobablyusedinhissuicide(自杀).Otherevidenceintheexhibition,includinghislastworksofartthatgiveawayhisdarkthoughts,backsupthebeliefthatVanGoghdiedbysuicide.
