AtBlackpoolHoltThomasandGrahamWhiteagreedtomakeapracticalexperimentincarryingmailsbyaeroplane.Theidea,asitwasfirstworkedout,wasfortheaeroplanetoflyfromBlackpoolairportacrosstoSouthportairport,andforthemailstobetakenoverbythePostOfficethere.Buttheprogrammehadtobechangedowingtoaseriesofhighwinds.WhathappenedintheendwasthatGrahamWhitetookamailbaginhisplane,andmadeaflightwithitacrosscountryforadistanceofaboutsevenmiles,returningtotheairport.ThisexperimentgaveGrahamWhitethehonourofbeingthefirstairmaninEnglandtocarryabagofmailacrosscountryinanaeroplane.Lettersandpostcardswhichwerecarriedinthistest,andwhichhadaspecialstamprecordingthefact,soonbecamemuchsoughtafterbycollectors.

ThesecondandmoreimportantexperimentinBritishairmailtransporttookplaceinSeptember1911,andwasthefirstofitskindinthiscountrytoobtaintheofficialpermissionofthePostmastergeneral.Itwasindeedoneofthehistoricaleventsinourairmaildevelopment.Inthiscaseasmanyas130,000letterandpostcardswerecarriedbyaeroplanebetweenLondonandWindsor.OneoftheairmenengagedinthispioneerservicewasthefamousGustavHamel,flyingamonoplane.Iremembergoingoutoneafternoontoseehimstartoffwithoneofthebagsofmail.Itwasanextremelybaddayforflying,andjustbeforethetimedueforthestart,thewindwasblowingatnearly50milesanhour.Noneoftheotherpilotswouldhavethoughtofgoingup,butHamel—oneofthefinestofallpilotsoftheBritishmonoplane—wasnottobestopped.Hejumpedintohismachineandfairlyshotofftheground.Themonoplane,solongasitwasneartheearth,wasthrownaboutlikeasmallboatonanangrysea.ButHamelgaveasplendidexhibitionofairmanship;

assoonashereachedagreatheight,conditionsbecamemuchsteadier,andherfinishedhisjourneywithoutaccident.

Thiswasanearlydemonstrationthatanairplanewasmorethanafineweathermachine,andthatitcouldfightitswaysuccessfullythroughviolentwinds.Thisfactimpressedthepostalauthoritiesagooddeal,andhelpedthosewhobelievedthattheairplanehadagreatcommercialfuture.

Vegetarian

Proteinsarebuiltupfromapproximatelytwentyfoodelementscalled“amino-acids”,whicharefoundmoreabundantlyinanimalproteinthaninvegetableprotein.Thismeansyouhavetoeatagreatdealmorevegetablethananimalfoodinordertogetenoughoftheseamino-acids.Agreatdealofthevegetablefoodgoestowasteinthisprocessandfromthephysiologicalpointofviewthereisnotmuchtobesaidinfavoroflife-longvegetarianism.
