1.Thispaperfirstlyintroducesmulti-tierB/SArchitectureandWeb-relatedtechnology.Basedonthem,thispaperpresentssystemobjection,systemdemand,mainfeatherandsystemdesignsolution,particularlydescribessystemdesignandimplementindetail.Insystemdesignandimplement,andkeypointsinothersub-systemarealsoanalyzedfurther.Thispaperalsointroducesmostlytechnologyofsystem.Lastly,thispapermakesasummeryandfiguresoutsomeproblemwhichneedtobeimproved.

Allofthischeapcomputerpowerhasalsomadeitpossibletosupportcomputation-intensivegraphicalinterfaces,whicharemucheasierforuserstounderstand.

InorderforB/Stowork,theapplicationprogramwhichusedtoresideentirelyonthemainframehasbeensplitintotwopieces,theclientpieceandtheserverpiece.

TheportionoftheapplicationthatresidesintheClientpersonalcomputerincludeslogicforthepresentationofinformationtotheuserandmechanismsforacceptinguserinput.ItalsoincludeslogicfordatainteractionattheClient,suchaschangingtheappearanceofthegraphicalinterfaceastheusermakevariouschoices.

TheClientsoftwareoftenincludescorporatebusinessrulesthatallowdatatobevalidatedbeforeitissenttotheserver.

TheportionoftheapplicationthatremainsontheServerisusuallyjusttheportionthatstoresdataatacentrallocation,accessibletootherusers.Theoncemightymainframeshavebeenreducedtodatabaseservers,whiletherestoftheapplicationhasmigratedouttotheclients.

Thismigrationhascausedmanyproblems.TheClientmachineshavebecome"fat".Asthecomplexityofapplicationshasrisenithasbecomenecessarytosupplyuserswithmoreandmorepowerfulcomputerswithfasterprocessors,morediskstorage,andmoreRAM.Itistruethatpersonalcomputermanufacturershavebeenabletodeliverbetterandbettercomputersforthesameamountofmoney,buttheconstantupgradesrequiredarecostlyforcorporations.Ittakesmorepeopleandtimetoupgradehundredsorthousandsofpersonalcomputersthanitusedtotaketojustupgradethemainframes.

SettingasidethecostofClientequipment,theproliferationofcorporateapplications,includingbusinesslogic,tohundredsorthousandsofmachineshasbecomeamajorcostfactorforcorporations.WhereITstaffsusedtobeabletomaintainallthecorporatesoftwareassetsinonecentrallocation,theynowneedtomaintaincorporatesoftwarespreadallacrossthecorporation,oftenhousedincomputersthatareoutofITcontrol.

TherearemanyestimatesavailablethatthecostofClient/Servercomputingiseightormoretimesthecostoftheequipmentalone.Severalcompaniesofferlarge,expensivesystemsthathavethesolepurposeofmaintainingcorporatesoftwarespreadoutalloverthecorporation.

Theissuehereisnotpersonal-productivitysoftwaresuchaswordprocessorsandspreadsheets.Personalsoftwareproductshaveenabledknowledgeworkerstoattainnewheightsofproductivity.Theissueisthemaintenanceofcorporatesoftware,suchasorder-entryandaccounting.Imaginethedifficultyofmakingaschemachangeinacorporatedatabase,andsynchronizingthatchangewiththeupdatingofthousandsofcopiesofthecorrespondingClientsoftware.

Itistruethattheuseofdepartment-levelLANscanbringdownthenumberofcopiesthatneedtobeupdatedtohundreds,insteadofthousands.ThesizeoftheLANsmustbelimited,becausethelargesizeofthefatclientsoftwarerequiresaresponsiveLANorelsetheuserswilljustcopytheenterprisesoftwaretotheirownmachines,bringingusbacktothousandsofcopiestobemaintained.

Thetaskofmakingsimultaneouschangestoevenhundredsofcopiesofclientsoftwareisstilladauntingone.
