2.1PersonalValuesandVision
Shwartz(1992)definesthatvaluesarecriticalprinciplesleadingourconductandgoals.Inordertogainingacomprehensiveselfunderstanding,identifyingmycoresetofpersonalvaluesisofgreatimportance.
AccordingtothePersonalValuesCardSortExercise,itisfoundthatmytenprioritisedvaluesare,insequence,Pleasure,Health,Friendship,Excitement,Growth,Beauty,Helpfulness,AchievementandWealth.
Pleasure,astheresult,ismycorevalue.Astheexplanationofthecardsforsorting,pleasuremeans‘tofeelgood’.Ialwaysseekmoremeaningworksuchasassistingothersorpursuingandnurturingrelationship,travellinginorderto‘feelbetter’.Theessenceofmypursuitsistoenhancethephysicalandemotionalpleasure.
MysecondmostimportantvalueisHealth.Iappeartogivehealthgreaterconcernthanpeers.Inmyviewthehealthybodyisthefundamentalofahappy,excitinglife.Friendshipisindispensableinmylifeaswell.Iwouldliketospendmyleisuretimewithmyfriendsratherthanstayalone.Thenextvalueisexcitement.Lifeistooshorttowaste.Iamalwayseagertoexperienceallmeaningfulthingsaroundtheworld.Helpfulnesscanbemypersonalvaluesaswell.Togiveotherassistanceandtohelpthemoutofsufferingsituationisoneoftheobligationsforeveryhumanbeing.Inmanycases,onlyalittlehelpyouofferedforotherscanactuallysolvetheirbigproblems.
Althoughitsoundssuperficial,Idocareaboutmyappearance.Asayoungwoman,keepingphysicallyattractiveisnotonlytopleasepeoplesurrounding,butalso,moreimportantly,pleasemyself.Lastbutnotleast,thetruthisnobodycanliveinadecenthigh–qualitylifewithoutmoney.Thus,tobefinanciallysuccessfulisanotherthingIwantinmylife.
Personalvaluesaretheprinciplewhichguidesthegoalsetting.Whencreatingavisionandsettingthegoals,personalvaluesshouldalwaysbetakeintoaccount.
2.2VisionandLifetimeGoal
Personalvision,likeone’sdreamlife,takesintoaccountthecurrentsituation,andservestopointthedirectionofwherewewishtogo(Covey1989).Craftingthepersonalvisionispivotalforindividualtomovetowardstherightdestination.
Thebestpossibleselfexercise(Sheldon&
Lyubomirsky2006)providesmeabroadviewofmypersonalvision.AsfarasIamconcerned,Iwanttoliveinahappy,abundantlifewithmyfamilyandfriends,andenjoymywork.
Whenitcomestomylifetimegoal,bothprofessionalsurveyresultandmyownopinionaretakingintoconsideration.
Todescribemygoalandvision,Iparticipatedina“LifeGoal”survey(PersonalLabOrg2010).Sixcategoriesofgoalsareidentifiedandfallintotwolargerclassesoflifegoals,termedIntrinsicandExtrinsicgoals.Intrinsicgoalsarethosecandirectlysatisfyinnatehumanneeds.ThegoalsofAffiliation,CommunityInvolvement,andSelf-AcceptanceassessedinthissurveyareexamplesofIntrinsicGoals.Extrinsicgoalsarelargelyfocusedonbeingaworthypersonintheeyesofothersorbeingrecoginisedbythesociety.ThegoalsofFinancialSuccess,SocialRecognition,andAttractivenessgotoExtrinsicGoals(Kasser&
Ryan1996).Accordingtothefeedback,Iappeartoplace
morefocusonfinancialsuccess,attractivenessthanthetypicalstudyparticipant.Ontheotherhand,Iplace
lessattentiononcommunityinvolvement,Affiliation,andespeciallySelf-Acceptance.Inanutshell,I
prioritizeintrinsicgoalsoverextrinsicgoalstoasubstantiallylesserextentthanothers.
Althoughthefeedbackcomesfromaprofessionalpsychologicalestimation,Imaynotholdthesameviewaboutmygoals.Speakingformyself,mylifetimegoalis,attheendofmylife,Iamabletolookbackonmylifeasmeaningfulandcomplete.SurelyIwouldliketohavesufficientamountofmoneyforspendingandsuccessfullyhidethesignsofaging.However,IdocareaboutmyfriendsandoneofmyvisionsistohavesomegoodfriendsIcancountonallthetime.Furthermore,Iamwillingtoengageinacommitted,enduringrelationshipinthe
future.SometimesIappearfearofanintimaterelationshipprobablybecausethefamilybreakdownIexperienced.
Intermsofthecareergoal,franklyspeakingIdonothaveaspecificoneatthismoment.IdeallyIwantacareerwhichcanutilizemycharacterstrengthsandgetasenseofachievement.Italsoshouldbebothinterestingandchallenging.IputmyinterestsinthefirstplacesinceIknowfewpeoplecanmaintaingoodperformanceiftheyarenotinterestedinthejobanddevotetothework.
Inlightoftheabove,myvisionandgoalsaresetaligningwithmyvalue.
2.3Impactofself-awareness
2.31Self-awarenessandPersonalValues/Goals
Thepersonalvisionandvaluesarehardlytobeachievedifwedonotawareofourresourcesandgaps.Hassed(2002)arguesthatunwillingnesstoinspectourselvesisareasonformakingmistakesrepetitively.Lackofclearself-awarenesscaneasilyleadustoadeadend,sincewearehighlypossibletooverestimateourcapability,orviceversa.Self-awarenessworksforeveryonetoperformbetterandobtainsuccess(DuvalandSilvia2002).Byidentifyingwhatwehave,ourstrengthscanbeefficientlyutilisedandourgapscanbesufficientlynarrowedaswell.Asaresult,wecanattainthegoalsandvalueseasier.
2.32happiness,successandeffectiveness
Self-awarenessisalsoregardedasanecessaryapproachtooverallhappinessandeffectiveness.AccordingtotheinvestigationdidbySmith(2011),theawarenessofthese

andmightincreasetheirproductivity,satisfactionwithwork,andhappiness.
Moreover,self-awarenesscanguidemetosuccessaswell.Byunderstandingmystrengthsandweaknesses,Iwillgothroughaprocessofself-accepted,motivatedandimproved.Thesesteps,eventually,willempowermetoabrightfuture.
Havingconsideredalltheargumentsabove,self-awarenessnotonlyplaysacriticalrolewhenachievingmyvalues,italsolinkstightlytohappiness,successandeffectiveness.
3.ExplorethePresent
3.1CurrentPersonalAttributes
Tofindoutmycurrentpersonalattributes,IfocusonanalysingmycharactertraitsbyusingtoolssuchastheMyers-BriggsTypeIndicator(BriggsandMyers1995)questionnaireandtheVIAstrengthsdiagnostic(PetersonandSeligman2004).
Myers-BriggsTypeIndicator(MBTI)isaclassificationofpersonalities,whichmeasuresthepreferencesinindividual’sperceptionoftheworldandjudgement(BriggsandMyers1995).Afterattemptingthistest,IwasdescribedastheENFPtype,thatisExtroversion,intuitive,Feeling,andJudging.Peopleofthistypeare‘enthusiasticandimaginative,spontaneousandflexible’(theMyersandBriggsFoundation2010).Italsoindicatesmywillingnesstoexperienceallthefascinatingpossibilitiesoflife.IwouldlovetogivesupporttootherswhileIneedalotofexternalaffirmation.Icanconnecteventsandinformationandreactveryquickly.
Ontheotherhand,VIAstrengthstestisanacknowledgeableonlinesurveywhichranksone’sstrengthsinorder.Thetopfivestrengthsarerelativelysignificantandneedtomakefrequentuse.Basedonthesurveyresult,mytopfivestrengthsare‘Optimism,Kindness,Perspective,
AppreciateofbeautyandJudgment.’TheresultturnsouttobeinalignmentwithwhatIperceivemyself.
Fromthesetests,Itcanbeconcludedthatmypersonalattributesareoptimism,enthusiastic,perspective,generosity,curiosity,gratitude,judgment,flexibility.Theseattributeshelpmetomygoalsandvalue.Forinstance,myprioritisedvalueandgoalis‘pleasure’.SinceIappreciatethebeautyoflifeandshowstrongoptimismandenthusiastic,Iameasytobepleasedandalwaysfeelhappy.Furthermore,Iamgeneroustoothers,whichbringmelotsoffriends.Iamwiseandjudging,whichletmemakerightdecisiononworkandstudy.Iamcurioustoeverythingintheworld,whichpushmetoexploretheword.Tosumup,thesepersonalattributesenablemetoachievemyvalueandgoals.
3.2Areasneedtobedeveloped
Havingconsideredmycurrentpersonalattributes,therearethreeperspectivesaddressedhereneedtobedevelop.Someofmycharacterstrengthsrequirefurtherdevelopwhiletheweaknessesinrespectofself-efficacy,andoverallpersonaleffectivenessshouldberedressed.
3.21Characterstrengths
Acharacterstrengthistermed‘adispositiontoact,desire,andfeelthatinvolvestheexerciseofjudgmentandleadstoarecognizablehumanexcellenceorinstanceofhumanflourishing’(Yearley1990,
