Butmostofall,Iwanttothankallofthestudentswhoareheretoday.AndIparticularlywanttothankEricSchaeferandZhuXuanhaoforthatextraordinaryEnglishandChineseintroduction.ThatwasapowerfulsymbolofeverythingthatIwanttotalkwithyouabouttoday.

See,bylearningeachother’slanguages,andbyshowingsuchcuriosityandrespectforeachother’scultures,Mr.SchaferandMs.Zhuandallofyouarebuildingbridgesofunderstandingthatwillleadtosomuchmore.AndI’mheretodaybecauseIknowthatourfuturedependsonconnectionsliketheseamongyoungpeoplelikeyouacrosstheglobe.

That’swhywhenmyhusbandandItravelabroad,wedon’tjustvisitpalacesandparliamentsandmeetwithheadsofstate.Wealsocometoschoolslikethisonetomeetwithstudentslikeyou,becausewebelievethatrelationshipsbetweennationsaren’tjustaboutrelationshipsbetweengovernmentsorleaders--they’reaboutrelationshipsbetweenpeople,particularlyyoungpeople.Soweviewstudyabroadprogramsnotjustasaneducationalopportunityforstudents,butalsoasavitalpartofAmerica’sforeignpolicy.

Throughthewondersofmoderntechnology,ourworldismoreconnectedthaneverbefore.Ideascancrossoceanswiththeclickofabutton.Companiescandobusinessandcompetewithcompaniesacrosstheglobe.Andwecantext,email,Skypewithpeopleoneverycontinent.

Sostudyingabroadisn’tjustafunwaytospendasemester;

itisquicklybecomingthekeytosuccessinourglobaleconomy.Becausegettingaheadintoday’sworkplacesisn’tjustaboutgettinggoodgradesortestscoresinschool,whichareimportant.It’salsoabouthavingrealexperiencewiththeworldbeyondyourborders–-experiencewithlanguages,culturesandsocietiesverydifferentfromyourown.Or,

Theselastingbondsrepresentthetruevalueofstudyingabroad.AndIamthrilledthatmoreandmorestudentsaregettingthisopportunity.Asyou’veheard,ChinaiscurrentlythefifthmostpopulardestinationforAmericansstudyingabroad,andtoday,thehighestnumberofexchangestudentsintheU.S.arefromChina.

Butstill,toomanystudentsneverhavethischance,andsomethatdoarehesitanttotakeit.Theymayfeellikestudyingabroadisonlyforwealthystudentsorstudentsfromcertainkindsofuniversities.Ortheymaythinktothemselves,well,thatsoundsfunbuthowwillitbeusefulinmylife?

Andbelieveme,IunderstandwheretheseyoungpeoplearecomingfrombecauseIfeltthesamewaybackwhenIwasincollege.

See,Icamefromaworking-classfamily,anditneveroccurredtometostudyabroad--never.Myparentsdidn’tgetachancetoattendcollege,soIwasfocusedongettingintoauniversity,earningmydegreesothatIcouldgetagoodjobtosupportmyselfandhelpmyfamily.AndIknowforalotofyoungpeoplelikemewhoarestrugglingtoaffordaregularsemesterofschool,payingforplaneticketsorlivingexpenseshalfwayaroundtheworldjustisn’tpossible.Andthat’snotacceptable,becausestudyabroadshouldn’tjustbeforstudentsfromcertainbackgrounds.

Ourhopeistobuildconnectionsbetweenpeopleofallracesandsocioeconomicbackgrounds,becauseitisthatdiversitythattrulywillchangethefaceofourrelationships.Sowebelievethatdiversitymakesourcountryvibrantandstrong.AndourstudyabroadprogramsshouldreflectthetruespiritofAmericatotheworld.

Andthat’swhywhenmyhusbandvisitedChinabackin2009,heannouncedthe100,000StronginitiativetoincreasethenumberanddiversityofAmericanstudentsstudyinginChina.Andthisyear,aswemarkthe35thanniversaryofthenormalizationofrelationshipsbetweenourtwocountries,theU.S.governmentactuallysupportsmoreAmericanstudentsinChinathaninanyothercountryintheworld.

Wearesendinghighschool,collegeandgraduatestudentsheretostudyChinese.We’reinvitingteachersfromChinatoteachMandarininAmericanschools.We’reprovidingfreeonlineadvisingforstudentsinChinawhowanttostudyintheU.S.AndtheU.S.-ChinaFulbrightprogramisstillgoingstrongwithmorethan3,000alumni.

Andtheprivatesectorissteppingupaswell.Forexample,SteveSchwarzman,whoistheheadofanAmericancompanycalledBlackstone,isfundinganewprogramatTsinghuaUniversitymodeledontheRhodesScholarship.Andtoday,studentsfromallkindsofbackgroundsarestudyinghereinChina.

TaketheexampleofRoyaleNicholson,who’sfromCleveland,Ohio.SheattendsNewYorkUniversity’sprograminShanghai.Now,likeme,Royaleisafirst-generationcollegestudent.Andhermotherworkedtwofull-timejobswhileherfatherworkednightstosupporttheirfamily.AndofherexperienceinShanghai,Royalesaid--andthisisherquote--shesaid,“ThiscityoozespersistenceandinspiresmetoaccomplishallthatIcan.”Andhappybirthday,Royale.Itwasherbirthdayyesterday.（Laughter.）

Andthenthere’sPhilmonHailefromtheUniversityofWashington,whosefamilycametotheU.S.asrefugeesfromEritreawhenhewasachild.AndofhisexperiencestudyinginChina,hesaid,“Studyabroadisapowerfulvehicleforpeople-to-peopleexchangeaswemoveintoaneweraofcitizendiplomacy.”

“Aneweraofcitizendiplomacy.”Icouldnothavesaiditbettermyself,becausethat’sreallywhatI’mtalkingabout.Iamtalkingaboutordinarycitizensreachingouttotheworld.AndasIalwaystellyoungpeoplebackinAmerica,youdon’tneedtogetonaplanetobeacitizendiplomat.ItellthemthatifyouhaveanInternetconnectioninyourhome,school,orlibrary,withinsecondsyoucanbetransportedanywhereintheworldandmeetpeopleoneverycontinent.

Andthat’swhyI’mpostingadailytravelblogwithvideosandphotosofmyexperienceshereinChina,becauseIwantyoungpeopleinAmericatobepartofthisvisit.Andthat’sreallythepoweroftechnology–-howitcanopenuptheentireworldandexposeustoideasandinnovationswenevercouldhaveimagined.

Andthat’swhyit’ssoimportantforinformationandideastoflowfreelyovertheInternetandthroughthemedia,becausethat’showwediscoverthetruth.That’showwelearnwhat’sreallyhappeninginourcommunitiesandourcountryandourworld.Andthat’showwedecidewhichvaluesandideaswethinkarebest–-byquestioninganddebatingthemvigorously,bylisteningtoallsidesofanargument,andbyjudgingforourselves.

Andbelieveme,Iknowhowthiscanbeamessyandfrustratingprocess.MyhusbandandIareonthereceivingendofplentyofquestioningandcriticismfromourmediaandourfellowcitizens.Andit’snotalwayseasy,butwewouldn’ttradeitforanythingintheworld.Becausetimeandagain,wehaveseenthatcountriesarestrongerandmoreprosperouswhenthevoicesofandopinionsofalltheircitizenscanbeheard.

Andasmyhusbandhassaid,werespecttheuniquenessofotherculturesandsocieties,butwhenitcomestoexpressingyourselffreelyandworshippingasyouchooseandhavingopenaccesstoinformation,webelievethoseuniversalrights--theyareuniversalrightsthatarethebirthrightofeverypersononthisplanet.WebelievethatallpeopledeservetheopportunitytofulfilltheirhighestpotentialasIwasabletodointheUnitedStates.

AndasyoulearnaboutnewculturesandformnewfriendshipsduringyourtimehereinChinaandintheUnitedStates,allofyouaretheliving,breathingembodimentofthosevalues.SoIguaranteeyouthatinstudyingabroad,you’renotjustchangingyourownlife,youarechangingthelivesofeveryoneyoumeet.

AndasthegreatAmericanPresidentJohnF.KennedyoncesaidaboutforeignstudentsstudyingintheU.S.,hesaid“Ithinktheyteachmorethantheylearn.”AndthatisjustastrueofyoungAmericanswhostudyabroad.AllofyouareAmerica’sbestface,andChina’sbestface,totheworld--youtrulyare.

Everyday,youshowtheworldyourcountries’energyandcreativityandoptimismandunwaveringbeliefinthefuture.Andeveryday,youremindus--andmeinparticular--ofjusthowmuchwecanachieveifwereachacrossborders,andlearntoseeourselvesineachother,andconfrontoursharedchallengeswithsharedresolve.

SoIhopeyouallwillkeepseekingthesekindsofexperiences.AndIhopeyou’llkeepteachingeachother,andlearningfromeachother,andbuildingbondsoffriendshipthatwillenrichyourlivesandenrichourworldfordecadestocome.

Youallhavesomuchtooffer,andIcannotwaittoseeallthatyouachievetogetherintheyearsahead.
